How much did Yorkies weigh 10-20 years ago? I was just curious to see if Yorkie sizes have changed in the last 10-20 years or more. It seems the average weight is 4-6 lbs these days although mine is a little over 8 lbs. Has anyone been around Yorkies long enough (without devulging your age, of course) to know if Yorkies have "shrunk" due to popular demand placed on breeders? thanks!! Samc |
Size of Yorkies Hi - I have had yorkies for years and years, since a child, and they seem to be pretty similar to me, it just depends on how big the parents are, I suppose! I have had quite large barrels on legs, up to 12lb, and some as small as 5lb. But I loved them all. :dog: |
My first yorkie was born in 1983, she was 4,5 kilo - second was born in 1984, he was 1,5 kilo and the third yorkie was born in 1989 ans she was 3,5 kilo.... for those that find it a challenge to convert :D my eldest was the "standard"yorkie that u see on postcards, my little boy was the smallest, he kept the black saddle, but had blonde legs and head with grey highlights and the youngest was very silver.... They all passed at the respective age of 14 years. as far as i can tell the sizes havent really changed much, i dont know why they are trying to get the breed to a smaller size, to me size doesnt matter, health is whats important.... i would love a 8 pounder that i can carry around on my hip with a bow in its hair ;) |
I donnou in 10-20 years..but yorkies, overall, used to be much bigger than the ones we see today. It is commom sense...how could a 3lb dog hunt and kill a 5lb rat? |
I think there have always been larger and smaller Yorkies. Early on they were shown in 2 classes, above 5 pounds and below 5 pounds. |
Iv heard they used to be quite a bit bigger, but as things are going, soon they will be the size of hampsters! (not good) :( |
size 40 yrs ago Yorkies were the same size as they are now. I had tinies and meduim size and a few 8 pounders. In fact over the years a ring size Yorkie has gotten larger..the first shows I went to about 35 yrs ago, they were in the 4 to 5 pound range...here in FLorida you see a much smaller Yorkie competing then back in MD. Goldie Stone, very well known in the history of the breed showed very tiny ones..look in some old books and you will see her tiny champions. |
