how often/necessary for a coat or sweater Hi (again) sorry i have so many questions for everyone all the time! I live on the east coast so we have all 4 seasons here... it never occurred to me until being on this site that snickers may need a coat/sweater - she is an indoor puppy and never outside unless its to go to the vet or puppy class... but i do intend to take her for short walks etc spring/summer/and fall... how necessary is a coat and/or sweater is this something everyone uses and that i should have? Thanks! |
somewhere I heard that they shouldn't wear a coat if its over 40 degrees. I think it was on yorkie talk awhile back. It had something to do with their immune system. Anyway, that's what I use to decide whether or not to have Ginger wear one of her coats. |
You will be so surprised on how many different of styles of doggie clothes they have, my Kloey is getting quite the wardrobe, I think she has better clothes then me! hehehe But I have coats for her in the winter time, and I have sweatshirts with hoodies, she has sweaters, dresses, doggie jean shorts. I was at the mall last night and they have this shop called "Pawsitively Pets" and let me tell you, I can not believe the things they had for are little babies, and expensive! Ohh Myy goodness! But it really just depends on you and your dog, but if your Yorkie is still a pup, you need to get him/her started asap so they will get use to it, same with the bow in the hair. |
so then she will probably need for me to get her a coat then? i was looking at a few but hesitating until i asked around a bit... and when they are wearing their coats they cant wear a harness so for walks you then have to use a collar? |

I just got my dogs coats and they are 1 years old. They have went out without one before now and have always been just fine. |
Ginger has several coats, and I deal with the harness differently depending on the style of coat. Some have holes that you can poke the leash through. Some have their closure along the back, I just hook up the leash to the harness and close the coat around. Others have no hole (or the hole is in the wrong place, and close on the dogs belly. Then I just enlarge her harness a bit and she wears it over her coat. She has several harnesses (I like lupine's H harness) so color-coordinating has not been a problem. GW Little has some adorable coat/harnesses. They're coat and harness in one. Good luck, and post pics. |
I live on the East Coast as well, and I always put sweaters on my yorkies if the temp is below freezing. Yorkies aren't 'outdoor' dogs, and they do not have an undercoat like most outdoor breeds. I find sweaters/sweatshirts are most comfortable for them because they 'move' with them. But the best advice is to observe your puppy - if he/she is shivering, then they most definitely need a sweater. |
Since I live in the Northeast, winters can be quite cold. When I had Yorkies that went out only for vet and kennel visits, they wore a sweater. Since Sean is trained to go outside for p&p, he wears a Fido coat. Keeps his belly warm and dry. Works great with the harness since the top is velcro. Just hook the leash to the metal loop and reclose the velcro. Before I got the Fido coat, he wore a sweater. I just poked a hole in the top and pulled the metal loop through it. BTW, there are some sales at http://www.felixandfido.com/catalog/specials.php I was lucky to be able to get him 2 coats at a great price. I'm not sure what I'll do when the weather gets warmer. (It will definitely be quicker to get outside without having to put on his coat or sweater.) He probably won't need anything to wear unless it's a cold night. Then he can just wear a sweater. |
Ginger has the fido fleece faux jag fur trimmed coat! I love it, she gets LOTS of compliments, and you're right, it works great with the harness. |

These little guys need a coat or sweater when they go outside in cold weather....especially for walks, etc., when they are out for more than a minute or two. (They are so little - and their hair is like ours - not a big wooly coat like my bichon has -- he could be a sled dog in Alaska and not get cold.) I haven't had my pup outside a lot because it is winter where I live, but when we go out -- he absolutely hates to come back inside. He will literally fight me to stay outside - regardless of the weather. Carol Jean |
