Can't understand why everyone is so irritated with the term "teacup". There's more in life to worry about then how someone describes a small dog.

"Is he a teacup?" --- my answer is always. "There is really no such thing as a 'teacup Yorkie.' " There is only one Yorkie -but what confuses most people is that they come in so many different sizes. I just have a small one."

Take this opportunity to educate people. There were 153 breeds registered with the AKC last year. Few of us "Yorkie Experts" know a lot about each of these different breeds.

My Yorkie is the "first Yorkie" in my family - and I have no friends who own a Yorkie. Needless to say, we have all learned a lot....not the least being that one single little breed can vary from 1 1/2 pounds to 14 pounds or more. Does any other breed share such a wide range in size???? I don't think so!

Be nice! I think some of us go around with "I'm an Yorkie expert chip on our shoulder."

I totally agree with Carol Jean and Lacie's Mom. I think the teacup question in PetSmart, PetCo, the dog park, vet's office, etc., etc., etc., is a perfect door opener to explain about our wonderful breed of dogs. Most folks ask the question not to be offensive, they just want to start a conversation, and they think it is an intelligent question.

The bandana is a "hoot" for me. Hopefully it will cause folks to ask questions, 'cause there isn't much I'd rather do than talk yorkie.

Some bulldogs are as small as 35-40 lbs and others go up to 70 lbs!!!

A range of 35-40 pounds to 70 pounds is only double.....

Little Yorkies from 1.5 lbs to 14 or more lbs --- is almost ten times larger

This means that some of your bulldogs should get up to 350 or 400 pounds to have the same range in size that the Yorkies have....

Most people think my little 4 yr old is a puppy because is so small

so called "tea-cups" and such else.
 

Speaking of "tea cup" i was reading women's world or a magazine sorta like that and i came across a page saying "Hollywood's latest Trend" = "designer dogs" Oh you wouldnt BELIEVE how MAD and Pissed i was that a magazine i read on a regular basis would put an article about these so called "designer dogs" needless to say everyone at my work got an ear full of education and a lesson lol. its was horrible. i was ragging inside!! :mad: :thumbdown

Great comeback!!!!!! I get this question all the time, too. I'll have to remember this. I usually just take the opportunity to educate them. They are usually well meaning friendly folks who just don't know any better.

Well can you get me in touch with one who designs a yorkie that doesn't chew on furniture, never has potty mistakes, that doen't wake me up in the morning and that doesn't require a bath every week. Also that doesn't bark when the door bell rings, that doesn't scratches door tell its let in the it wants, etc......................... :animal36

Pink Daisy - We have had many threads on "Designer Dogs," and a lot of us think they are just fine. The term was coined by the media - and then it took off. A lot of these dogs are priced too high, but other than that a lot of these little dogs have been around for a long time.... small dog mixes, etc.

In fact, many people here on YT have these small mixes and love them to death. And, some people here have bred them or are breeding them.

Vets like them - thinking that they will tone down some of the faults and illnesses that many purebred dogs have.

Anyway - with love I'll say they are "darling little mutts" - I had Poodle/Pom myself that cost $250 (15 years ago - expensive at that time), and she was the best little dog I have ever owned. The term "designer dogs" hadn't been thought of at that time I bought her - she was just expensive because she was the product of "two expensive little purebreds." She did, however, cost less than the purebreds did then.

This is one of those controversial issues that goes crazy every time it's mentioned. But, I'm an easy going, not too critical person who thinks there's room in the world for all kinds of dogs --- and believe that both purebreds and mixes will be around forever. And both make wonderful pets.

Puppy mills seem to be latching onto and selling these little dogs - and that, as far as I am concerned, is a whole different issue. We know without a doubt or even mentioning it how we all feel about puppy mills. They will sell anything that they can make $$$$ off of.

I think some of these fast becoming-more-popular little mixed breeds are just darling (look at some of the ones owned here). They are just little mixes - many of which have been popular and have been a round for a long time.

And as far as price goes - if someone wanted to pay me $15,000 for my cat -consider it sold! I see $1000 designer dogs - and I've seen $10,000 Yorkies. People will always pay whatever they want to or can afford to pay for a pet.

Puppy mills - we never go there - they even sell Yorkies....

Yes I would agree the best way to handle the question "Is that a teacup?" is to politely educate people on the proper terminology. Another solution is if you're sick of being asked that question or other questions about your furbaby when you bring her out in public is to simple leave your dog at home. I guarantee you you will not get any annoying questions asked of you if your puppy is happy at home.

I don't care when people ask me that and I am sure not going to lecture them for asking about my dog.

In the real world most people just think our dogs are cute and wonder about their size. Yesterday I ran into another Yorkie owner who's dog was very large for a Yorkie. He asked me if mine was a mini and I said no, just small for the breed. He said well his is just large for the breed. We let them rub noses and we laughed about the difference in size. We both agreed they are great dogs no matter what size they are.

The ONLY time the teacup word bugs me is when breeders use the word, as if it is a correct breed description. Even more irritating is the YT members who BUY from breeders like that. Legitimate, knowledgeable Yorkshire Terrier breeders know that these dogs are in the TOY group. period.
