Too thin?? LOL, as Bobby's new mum, I guess I need something to worry about but I would appreciate some info! Are Yorkies usually thin? I can feel his ribs and that worries me. He eats Nutro several times per day and has Nutro puppy biscuits as an evening snack. He went to the vet and they did a fecal analysis -- no worms or any sort of parasites. He's very active, bright-eyed and happy. He's almost 6 months old. Am I just a nervous new mum? This is my first Yorkie so maybe I'm just used to my chubby bulldogs? lol. Julie |
I am sure he is fine. Chachi is 9lbs but he is long and thin too. You can feel his ribs. |
I've read that you are supposed to be able to feel dogs ribs, if you can't feel them your dog is overweight. |
Tonee started thinning out as she got older. the vet didn't seem concerned, i had her checked for worms also. i could feel her ribs and back bone to much for me. she has been very active from the start though and she picks at her food sometimes. i started adding that missing link to her food. i think she is just built that way. |

my yorkie is thin too :animal-pa BeeBee is 3 1/2 lbs. She is 1 1/2 years old, and I just got her 2 weeks ago. The vet said she is a 4 out of 5 for having good weight for her size. I am still worried though because she doesnt eat her food very much. I stir in moist puppy food into her yorkie royal canin food, and she licks it off. She does the same at lunch, not eating any kibble. At night, she will finally eat kibble, bu not intil late at night, and even then she only eats maybe a 1/4 cup or less. Is this normal for yorkies? I cant even get her to eat a treat biscuit through out the day. |
Hope was 2 when we got her and she weighed 3.25 lbs. The vet said she was not too thin, that we should be able to feel her ribs. When we first got her she ate less than she does now (guess she was nervous). She has now plumped :D up to 3.5 lbs. Maybe yours will eat more as she becomes more familiar with her new surroundings. Yorkies come in all different body shapes and sizes. My Riley is thin but solid and Jo is what I call 'squishy'...he has a little extra if you know what I mean ;) They both have good appetites and aren't picky eaters...the difference is in the genes. I was told as long as you could feel the ribs but not see them it's o.k. |
My little guy (6 months old) has always been a slender little guy. BUT - only recently I have noticed him getting only slightly heavier. OR - because his coat is a little longer, he may only appear to be a little heavier. I would think that if you shaved to coats off all these long-haired Yorkies, you'd find a lot of slender little dogs underneath all that hair. I wouldn't worry about it. If he eats well and appears to be happy and healthy - you are probably all the better off with his being thin. Even with mine being thin - the vet said, "This is the most solid little guy I have ever seen," and gave him a clean bill of health. Everyone was always telling me that they were getting grossly fat, and I needed to start watching what they ate --- until I got them groomed with a much shorter haircut. Then everyone would say, "Nevermind - there's nothing there! |

Barren, Shakes as in shakes her fur or shakes as in trembling? I had a bulldog who was an incredibly finicky eater and his head and body would shake when his blood sugar was low. The only dog food I found that this guy would eat was Pedigree. He LOVED it! Go figure! I went through a lot of bags of different brands before I discovered this, too! I am so glad that Bobby loves Nutro and I don't have to go through the dog food trials again, lol. Thank you, SnowWa and all!!! Bobby weighs about 9 pounds. I'm thinking that his weight might be adjusting now, too, because his activity level has increased so much. Poor baby got precious little exercise/playtime at the pet store. Julie |
shakes kind of tremors i guess. she is almost always shaking at least a little, and her ears feel cold. i put shirts on her, wrapped her in blakets, but she still shakes. i have only had her 2 weeks, so maybe she is still nervous, but not wanting to eat makes me think its something wrong. |
Exactly how many old is your little furbaby and how much does it weigh? Mine turns 2 yrs old this month . He shakes often througout the day and I used to think it was Hypoglycemia until I found out it has to do with his liver problem (microvascular dysplasia) Sometimes they are finicky eaters and sometimes the are finicky because of health reasons. My Yorkie is pretty thin, and very long. She's 7lbs though and skinny. I can feel her ribs slightly and her backbone too.. it's scary! :p |
