How Much to Feed at a Time How MUCH do you feed your babies at a time? I think I should feed Molly 3 times a day..... she's 1.3 lb. How much do you think I should give her at each portion? The breeder was giving her purina puppy chow. I had eukanuba that I was trying to switch her over to, but she didn't seem to like it that well. I also put baby food chicken on there sometimes. LOVES IT!! :animal-sm Plus, her skin is pretty dry, so I bought some Nutro Puppy this a.m. She seems to really like it at first try. She was picking it out of the purina. The vet gave me a homemade recipe for shampoo for dry skin that I'll post later. Have to run right now. Thanks for your input on the food. :) |
I feed as precribed by the food...Mojo eats 2 times a day and 1/3 of a cup each meal...looks mean but if i don;t watch out my lil guy gets "chubby" hehehe |
I keep food out all the time. On demand feeding, I guess. She has a tendency to go hypoglucemic on me, so this has worked! Pat |
My breeder always told me to leave food out at all times for him. When he was a pup, I'd leave dry food out and feed him a 1 tablespoon of canned lamb and rice 3 times a day, and then after a week I narrowed it down to 1 teaspoon.. now I just keep dry food out. I'm not sure if this is good. Which one would be better, I wonder.. a scheduled eating time or just to let him eat however much he wants when he's hungry. |
Schedule eating helps me because of my schedule and with potty training...that way you know about what time he will need to use the bathroom:) |
I also free feed Bailey. He has about 1/3 cup of food in his dish at any given time. |
I don't really have a problem with leaving food out all of the time, actually what she doesn't eat, I do. I just want to make sure she is getting enough. How much should she eat a day do you think for her size/weight? |
I was wondering about this myself. Bridget eats so little, maybe 3 tbs of wet, and the same of dry per day. should I worry? I try to get her to eat, and beileve it or not she is eating a lot more now than before. any suggestions? she is currently on royal canine (then only dry food she will eat other than my cat food) and a canned food that is 95% meat. |
its interesting you say that, because I was feeding daisy Royal canin because that's what the breeder was feeding her but she would hardly eat. I was very scared because she was skinny, so I was recommend to use Eukanuba and she loves it, the first time i took it out and applied half of Royal canin and half of eukanuba she loved it. Now she eats fine, but she is still small and she loves to play, so sometimes instead of eating she rather play. That's what I did, hope it helps! |
Are you suppose to feed them soft canned food besides the hard food? I only feed Snoodles the hard Science Diet food. Is this okay? Pat |
Stewie has about two cups of dry Eukanuba in his bowl at all times. He eats probably 1/3 to 1/2 a cup per day. |
I am still leaving the dry food out all the time and they tend to "graze" throughout the day. I was so petried in the beginning about low blood sugar because I had one it happened to that I had to syringe feed for five days, that I would do "anything" to get them to eat. I probably didn't have to do that with Hefner becasue he has always eaten well from the day we brought him home. I hate to admit it now but he was so spoiled that I cooked him chicken everyday and he wouldn't eat unless I hand fed him or used a fork!!! The wet food ia actually really bad for their teeth and most vets recommend kibble only because chewing it removes the tartar from their teeth. When he reached about 5 months and was over 2 lbs., I finally quit all that and he eats the dry kibble just fine. I never give him wet food and anymore and he only gets chicken if we are out somewhere and I have nothing else to feed him. I also put the cat food up out of his reach because it is not good for dogs. It is too rich and has too much protein in it. |
Yeah, well I only feed daisy dry food, never tried canned food, but she's eating real well! |
Toy breeds are notorius for having dental problems. Lots of vets and breeders will tell you to feed them dry kibble. I guess it would depend on the age of the pup. Mine were 12 and 14 weeks old when I brought them home so my breeders said not to use wet dog food. I free feed & put 1 cup of fresh kibble out each morning. They usually don't eat it all so I toss out anything leftover. Between my 2 adult dogs they eat (combined) a total of 1/2 to 3/4 cup of food . |
We leave food out all the time for our little Gracie. We give her Eukanuba and Pedigree Puppy food canned. We leave some of each out for her. We both work during the and don't get home till after 5pm so would be difficult I think to put her on a feeding schedule. Heather & Steve |
