Jumping at Ground Level...Okay? We don't allow Otis to jump off furniture, but lately, I've noticed he LOVES it when I hold a toy in front of me, and he leaps up and tries to grab it with his teeth. He can jump so high now, he looks like he's doing an ollie on a skateboard, and sometimes it's so high, his little body does a jack knife thing mid-air!! (Kinda like when you see those big dogs leaping after a frisbie) He LOVES it, but I'm wondering how dangerous it is. I figure since he's starting and ending on the ground and he's only jumping to his limit, it can't be too bad. Plus it's on the carpet and he always lands on all fours. Maybe it's good exercise? I hate to rob him of his fun. |
I think on carpet is okay, just make sure he doesn't land on anything besides the carpet. Yoda loves to dance and do small hops, but he really doesn't jump high per se. But Yoda does sometimes twist in the air trying to grab something out of our hands. Also, since Otis is not yet a Yorkie senior citizen, he should be able to jump around just fine. |
How funny. My husband and I were JUST talking about this. We were in the living room cleaning up and he had one of Tia's toys in his arms. Our little girl jumped up so high, we were simply amazed, then worried that she may hurt herself if she continues - glad to see she's not the only jumper. |
toby is a major jumper..... he has been bounding off couches and the bed since we got him at 12 weeks old..... i tried stairs, but that didnt work, i think he figured it was "too much effort to walk down stairs and he would rather just take a flying leap" .... oh well,.... he hasnt hurt himself yet, (he is larger though....... he is 9 lbs)...... so hes not a tenny that can get hurt easily.... i worry just the same though  |
Toto has started doing that too! We just make sure if we happen to be on the terra cotta that we move over to the carpet! I worry about her little knees but she loves jumping sooo much we just can't make her stop. She always uses her little "boosts" to get up and down from the bed, etc. but ever so often she just wants to jump!! ;) |
Lucy love to jump at us! We put her frisbee on our heads and she loves to jump and try and grab it off (when we are sat down of course!) The only places we dont let her jump are where we have laminate flooring or tiles. This is as there is nothing to absorb the shock. Also I know of some owners whose dogs have had problems with legs and back after playing on slidy floors so carpets and grass for us! |
Max is a jumper, too...I'm not sure how I'd be able to stop him from leaping on & off the couch...I'm pretty sure he's convinced he can fly. |
Biggie is a jumper also. I remeber the day i picked him up from the breeder, and his mom and dad were in the front yard jumping up and down. his dad was jumping so high i knew Biggie would be a jumper for sure.I only let him jump off the ottoman onto the carpet(which isn't too high for him) otherwise he's always jumping for a toy!!!! |
Frankie jumps a lot too, no injuries yet thank god, he's jumped off the couch since I've gotten him, but he always runs to the end of the couch and jumps onto his pillow bed. Last night he jumped onto the couch by himself and then up to the back of the couch, I couldn't beleive he was able to jump that high. The cats were not very impressed, because the back of the couch was where they'd always go to get away from Frankie, so it was a little funny last night watching them trying to seek out higher ground! |
Snoodles is a jumper too! I don't know how one would stop them from that habit! She will jump on the couch, from there leap to my chair, and then leap to my husband's chair and then jump to the floor! I swear she should be in the circus! Pat |
Luigi too loves to jump. We've tried scolding him from jumping on and off anything. But we can't stop him. Sine he loves to jump, we thought we would try something. We got that stick you put in sliding glass doors to keep from opening them ( I don't know what they are called) and we get himto jump over that. We put a treat on the other side and he does sooo good. We now have that stick thing up to our knees!!!! He flies over that w/o touching it. But we are still a little wary of putting it up any higher. We also put other obsticles up and he avoids those also!!! Its sooooo fun!!!! :p I have started reading up on agiltiy trainign and we are thinking about putting him in those classes when he turns one!!!! :) :animal-sm Mandy & Luigi :animal-sm |
Mia is my jumper and climber. I have tried everything I can think of but I have caught her on my kitchen table a few times. I don't want to startle her because I'm afraid she will leap off. She has also jumped I would say about 2 feet or so from the bed to the dresser. The other day we were in the laundry room and she jumped into my garbage can and it's 2 feet tall. Straight from the ground up and over...I think she should have been named Pogo...she acts like she has springs for legs. |
