Vet problems...please help!
 

I'm having a terrible time finding the right vet! This is a long story, but worth ready esp. for new owners. I took my furbaby Anniebelle to my local vet for her first vaccinations...I wasn't impressed as he treated her as a barn yard animal. The facility was very dated and he didn't take much time w/ the exam. For her next visit I took her to a vet I had taken a very sick pomeranian to a few yrs ago. This vet was wonderful w/ my pom, but is an hour and half away. While waiting for our appointment time...two hours late I might add, I was reading about dogs having reactions to vaccinations. When I took my precious baby in, they promptly took her into another area for treatment. I could hear her crying and screaming! I know how she is about things so I tried to keep a cool head, but after a few minutes of this I started for the door...it was locked of course. All seemed well other than her needing some vitamins. When I got home I noticed her eyes were beginning to swell ! I paged the vet ASAP! We gave her benadril as instructed, the swelling subsided soon after. However, she was so upset she wouldn't allow me to lay her down until 3:00 am! She seemed to be very tender and would cry when picked up. Now, nearly everytime she poops she yelps. I am going to have her spayed around the age of six months and would like to get her established w/ a good vet. I feel like I'm vet hoping and I really don't know what to do! Can anyone help me?? Am I over reacting? I feel they were a little too rough w/ her. I feel I made a bad call and I feel terrible about it. I live in a VERY rual area w/ few vet choices.

I understand your worry about your yorkie. My yorkie crys for a few days after getting shots because yorkies are tiny and shots hurt and the area tends to swell abit and be tender. I don't think the vet hurt her intentionally. She will probablly do that with all shots. My vet knows my pup reacts to shots badly and so she gives her a benadrly shot with her vaccinations to keep the reactions at bay. I hope all goes well and you find a vet you really love!

Poor baby....finding a good vet is important and that's too bad you don't have too many choices - maybe you could sit this vet down and tell him how you feel ?

On the shots - space them out ! Tell the vets she is prone to reactions and you don't have to do them all at once....GOOD LUCK !

When I take my furbabies in for their shots I stay with them. The Only Time they Take Them to the "BACK" is for blood work or when they need their glands expressed. Where do you live in VA? I will be going to the vet next week I can Ask IF they know of a Good Vet in Your area.The soreness wil go away in a few days.When Peanut got his first shot he screamed and was sore for two days.This lasted for two days.Next time they gave the next set in a different spot no pain.

Im not sure why you werent allowed in with your dog for vaccines. My vet wants you there to make the dog feels more comfortable. A dog who is more relaxed with less tense muscles is going to be alot less sore then one with tense muscles. I think your presence would have made your dog feel much better with the situation.
Its very hard finding a good vet. Im yet to find one I have total confidence in who is "well rounded" in all treatment of my yorkies. Im talking routine checkups plus emergency situations. In my area its been difficult to find one who fits my yorkies needs totally.
A vet who treats toy breeds is a speciality! Good luck on your search and may you find a great one.

I know that whenever my dogs need something done that might be uncomfortable - to just let the vet take her, do it, get it over with, and then bring her back to me.

Just like children, dogs are a lot worse when their owners are there.

I know in an x-ray office where I worked, we occasionally had to use an IV with a child. More often than not, with their mothers there, they screamed and cried and really carried on. More than once the doctor suggested that the mother wait outside the door - and usually the child settled down and behaved much better. I guess they realized that they had no one to complain to. (Don't we all know that children are worse when their mothers are around - dogs are sometimes also.)

I'd rather let the vet take care of my dog and do what he needs to do quickly. Then, I can take my pup home and spoil him to death!

I think sometimes dogs can sense their owners nervousness when things are being done - and this makes them even more fearful. I am always amazed at how much my vet can get done with my pup and how quickly he can do it....and how my little pup almost just lets him do whatever he wants. I know sometimes when I try to do the same things - my dog carries on like he is being killed - and it takes me three times as long. Example - my vet can get my dog to swallow three pills and pull the hair out of his ears in about 5 seconds. Amazing!

Hi, and welcome to YT. Where are you located in VA? Are you near a larger city or even the Univ of VA vet school? There is no reason for a Yorkie No matter how big a baby we have made of them, to cry as you describe after a vaccination. AND, you must have a little tag made for her that states she is allergic to puppy vaccines.
NOW, for the biggie. Which vaccine did they use? What were the diseases it covered? This is so important to know. Betcha the serum had corona and lepto in it as well as a stabilizer compiund. Can you post the diseases the serun guards against? Several of us have had similar probs with dogs after vaccines and it helps to know which ones bothered your baby. These kinds of things scare the bejeebees out of me and I am an old nurse and experienced breeder soI know how it must have frightened you.
Give her smoochies for us and hold off on any more vaccines for a while..

This is terrible!!!! I hope you find a good vet soon. My vet is so careful with Zoe. I am in the room when she gets shots, his nurse holds her and then gives her to me for comforting. He gives her some kind of little pill that he says will keep her from hurting and getting sick. She is very tiny and her shots go very smoothly with little pain, during or after. He spaced them out a bit due to her small size & would not give her more than one at a time.

Don't feel bad about vet hopping at all!! You are doing the right thing trying to find a good, competant vet. This is extremely important for both you and Anniebelle. :aimeeyork

Welcome to Yorkie Talk! You have come to the right place. I have moved around the country and I'm always in the hunt for a "good Vet." I have no problem at all VET searching. If they do not have good bed side manner and I do not like how they have treated my furbaby........I'M gone!!!!! I keep looking till I find one that is a Good VET and good with my furbaby ....... Plus with me. Good Luck! :)
