Microchip?
 

I'm thinking on microchip Bentley, I'm just very nervous about it, can you tell me your experiences :confused: :confused: :confused: Is it painful, how they recover from it? do you recomended?

Zeus had it done when he was neutered and he was fine. You could never even tell it was done, no stitches or anything. :)

I have two that are micro chipped but it was already done when I got them. The only thing that I really don't like is that you can slightly feel it and it's kind of strange...

The day that I picked Daisy up they did hers and I didn't even hear her cry.. I don't really think it's any big deal.. Sort of like having a shot..

I can feel Daisy's too, but not Hunter, my lab.. Maybe it's because they are smaller dogs with less meat on their bones.. :D

All my Yorkies have microchips . They were implanted when the pups were 8 weeks old .

My little one is 17 weeks, his appt is Monday and i'm scare, hopefully everything will be ok after it.... :aimeeyork

I had my large dog done and she did just fine its just like a shot . No blood or soreness at all.

Frogknot is getting microchipped in May when he gets fixed. My bulldog is also microchipped.

Microchipped - there was another thread on this just recently, you may want to use the search button to find it. There was a ton of information on it that I think was really helpful. (Websites to register your number, chips moving from injection site, best to do it when they are already "out", etc).

I haven't had this done yet either, so reading all the posts were very helpful! Good luck!

The chips are great! There is no pain, and they are protected for life.
We had a friend who's furbaby was stolen, the only way the police knew for sure it was hers, was that chip. The people who took her had pictures that looked just like her. If that chip wasn't there, it would have been a court case.

I was also at the Vets Office one day, someone came in with a puppy. They had a funny feeling it wasn't there's and they were right, they scanned the pup and it was stolen form someones yard. I asked how they knew to check, they said it was the look on her face & it looked like a pup who was in for shots the week before. When I was driving away, the Police pulled up, guess it wasn't going to be someones day.
Princess is with me 24-7 but you never know, so I had all my furbabies chipped as soon as they came home.

Ok, really... Not to sound strange or anything why can't we microchip humans?? I mean, we can lojack a car so that automatically, if it's stolen we find it. Why can't we do this to our children so that these crazed people will stop taking them??? I for one would microchip my babies if it would help to unsure their safety.. OK, now that I sound like a weirdo.. I've said my point..

I asked my vet about this today. She is always honest and that is one of the reasons I really like goin there.

She said that it really doesn't hurt, it is much like getting their vaccination shots. She said that it is not suppose to move from the injection site, but there have been cases of them "moving" to another spot in the animal.

She showed me the needles (yes, they are huge) and that same size is used on any size of pet. (maybe another reason why do have it done when they are already "out" for another reason - spay/neuter, teeth cleaning, etc).

One word of caution though!!! I asked about every vet/shelter/etc having a scanner and she said that some places use a newer or older scanner (sorry, can't remember) and it will pick up the chip, but it won't read the number. I think maybe there is a newer brand that doesn't read the number, so therefore, it would be pointless. She also said that if your puppy was stolen, chances of it being taken to a vet that would suspect any foul play is slim - that vet would then not feel the need to have to scan the puppy.

So, there are pros and cons (as with anything else). I think this is solely up to the person and the area in which they live.

My vet said that with me, she didn't think it was needed, but that was strictly up to me to decide - okay, she didn't come out and say, you don't need this, she just felt that the way I handle Mojo, etc. that I may never need it. I know that you just never know what might happen, so that is why I think it is up to the owner to decide.

Bentley had it done last Monday, it wasn't painful, just like a regular shot, it bleed for 5 minutes, that was it.... :animal-pa

I have both of mine microchipped. It is true what a vet said . If a dog is stolen and taken for the first time to a vet.A vet won't just scan the dog for a first time visit. I think all vets should scan every new dog that comes for a first appt.It would only be good if the dog is taken to a shelter because the shelter has to scan the dog just to make sure. I just think that if a yorkie is lost ,most likely it will NOT be taken to a shelter !
The thing about the microchipping humans and the bible. I know what your hubby is talking about. My mom is the same way. I just don't take every single thing in the bible literal...

When I was a kid, my family got a dog from a shelter that was already microchiped, but we didn't register her because there was a really large fee plus a per month upkeep cost. I am now looking to microchip my new Yorkiw and was trying to find out exactly how much it would all be. I didn't see any upkeep costs mentioned on the avid website. Is it only a one time initial cost? The only other thing that I saw was a fee to update information.

Eleanor has been chipped. My mom is a breeder and she chips all her babies. She also has her own scanner. It's really cool. I can't feel Els chip at all and I have tried to see if I could. Sometimes the puppies yelp but that's about it. I think it is a good point though that they may never get scanned. I just keep my fingers crossed that if El ever got out an honest person would find her.

Lauren the breeder of Gazou and Heidi have all her Yorkie puppies microchiped and she never had to pay additional costs .
