Docking yorkie tails Why are yorkie's tails docked it it just for looks or is there a health reason that they are docked? I know why lamb tails are docked but not why any dogs tails have to be can anyone tell me? |
I think it's a stupid thing to do. And who ever made it a rule, should have their tail docked! It has nothing to do with health, it would be different if it was, but no, it's done for looks. :( Now, they are rethinking it, and might put a stop to it. I know in Germany, they won't dock Rotties anymore. A Breeder told me that, so he's not going to dock his litters anymore. I've seen pictures of very cute Yorkies with their tails. :) :) :) |
Tail docking has its roots for Yorkies, I believe, in the ratting/vermin jobs it used to do. While following vermin into small places, they didn't want the dogs' tails to catch and tear. These days, the practice is just done for cosmetic effect. To the best of my knowledge it is banned in many European countries as animal cruelty. That is why the Biewer's standard is to have a full tail. As my personal opinion, I would have rather not had Yoshi's tail docked if I had known at the time. It is cute, but I really can't condone cutting off the extremity of an animal if it doesn't serve a practical or medical purpose. |
I will be bringing home a new Yorkie girl around March 16th. At first I was very disappointed that her tail had not been docked, but after reading and seeing some pictures I now feel okay about her having her tail. I think the U.S. is slow catching up to the rest of the world since most countries have outlawed docking. I saw a anti-docking website that had a gory picture with cut baby tails entitled Docking is Shocking and that was enough to make me glad that her tail had not been chopped off. I think as more and more people stop docking tails we will become use to the look and like it. |

Thank you very much for the information I am going to email the person that my little one is coming from and see if he would agree to not docking his tail . Those pictures of the ones with their tails look so much better than when they are cut off. I have one yorkie now and he had his tail docked when little but he is always looking behind him like something is missing. I hope the USA gets in gear and bans it soon. |

I will have to say that I like the fact the dew claws are removed. They do get caught on things and can become scagged. |
