His darn coat!!!! Ugh! I am getting sooo frustrated! I have tired almost everything on Luigi's coat! Its just sooo cottony, I can not stand it anymore and I think I have to have him cut short and just keep it that way! I love the CC products! And for the longest time, they worked great on him, No Mats or no knots! But then about a month ago, I swear it just quit working on him. UGH! I have tried a few other brands and even tried no more tangles by Johnson and Johnson. And still nothing! It keeps gettin worse! UGH! So I called the groomer to make and appointment, and of course I can't get in til March 16th! Grrr! I feel so bad. I have been brushing him for about an hour! And I don't want to "torture" him anymore!!!! Oh what to do, what to do!!!!! So til then, I guess I have to put up with the tangles. Grrr. So when I do get him cut, I am thinking of keeping his face, tail and legs longer, and then cutting his body short. What do ya think??? OK! Sorry sooo long here!!!! Just had to vent! LOL!!!! |
Chachi is a cotton coat too. We keep his body real short and the face a little longer and its real cute on him. I would rather have the short hair than the matts. |
I think Luigi will look darling in that cut! I cut Maddie that way for summer and I liked it. I also keep her face, legs and tail long. Can't wait to see Luigi after his trip to the groomer!!! |
I May Be Commiting a Sin But.... Jazzie & Jewel both have cottony coats too. I know it's a NO-NO but... :D After shampoo, I use Pantene deep conditioning conditioner (wow! that's a type full!) and when I brush them between baths, I use the Pantene Leave In conditioner. As Adam Sandler said as Billy Madison "It make the hair Shiny & Smooth"! Because both my girls have long coats, I do occasionally get matts that are just impossible, I snip it off and it doesn't show at all! |

Really??? Pantene??? Hmmmm????? I didn't think people shampoo and conditioner wer good for them? But hey if it works, I shall try! I wish Luigi's hair was like Brasco's!!!! He has the best shiny coat!!!!! Luigi is soo jealous! LOL |

Here are some pictures of Jazzie so you can see how cottony she is and how shiny her coat is. |
I found that when I wash her hair in "puppy" shampoo it cuts down on the tangles a bit. Don't know why it works on Gracie but it does. And I am guilty, I cut the matts out too! Sometimes I have even bathed her with dove shampoo/conditioner!!!!! I recently did a cut just like you were talking about and it looked cute! Her face/tail/legs were long and the rest of her was cut short. I did eventually cut the hair around her face shorter, I have been trying new "doo's" on her latley. Right now I am growing it all back out again. |
I am forced to use human shampoo on the Mitzer, due to ZERO pet stores here. I have to say that so far she's looking good. It's the Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo, and L'Oreal Elsève conditioner. I've no tangles or knots, and she's shining a bit these days too. I'm still not sure what kind of coat she has, silky or cotton. I think it's gonna be a cotton though. I'm no expert! LoL!!!! |
Pippa is prone to matting too. I use human shampoo and conditioner all the time, it suits her. |
I have 2 girls with thick, dark, cottony coats. I keep them cut in a puppy style cut. They look adorable and so much easier to keep. Sometimes I thin out and leave a little skirt hanging on Ida"s sides. :) |

I agree I use them too!! They work great!! :D |

She does look soooo gorgeous! Very shiny indeed! OK! I will give it a try! Thanks! And I have tried puppy shampoos, and baby shampoos before! Trust me!!! I have tried alot! But not that!!!!!! |
Someone on here posted a puppy shampoo/conditioner i will be trying on snickers that is supposed to be great... it was the Royal Treatment Honey Oatmeal Pet Shampoo... you can get it at Target in the meantime i am using Aussie moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioner and it makes her look beautiful, fluffy, and soft! |
Gucci has a cottony coat also. I use Mane & Tail Shampoo and Tresseme conditioner, and so far they work fine. But I think Im going to give Pantene a try because her hair is soft but not very shiny. Thanks for the tip. |
The puppy cuts are really cute. Princess gets it every summer because it's so hot here. I think you're going to like it. :) :) :) |
I'm a Sinner Too.... I use Redken Extreme Anti-Snap leave in conditioner after I bath her, I also have a spray bottle with a watered down version that I use in between bath times. Zoey coat is coming in great, We have not had a big problem with mats or tangles. The only time I seem to have problems is it I put her in a sweater. The Cotton Tees don't tangle her up to much just the sweaters for some reason, but heck I'm in Texas and she only will wear sweaters a few weeks out of the year. :p Here is the info on the Anti-Snap product; A scientific breakthrough, our 3D Repair Complex builds long-lasting strength and conditioning into hair leaving it healthier and more manageable. It is specially formulated to provide a triple line of defense: Proteins penetrate deep into the core of the hair helping build internal strength. Ceramide enters the cuticle layers to reinforce the structure and help repair damaged areas Natural Lipids, like those found in the hair, help resurface the hair leaving the cuticle shiny, smooth and protected. ;) Blah Blah Blah, all I know is it works for us. I haven't tried the CC products yet, I'm still thinking about ordering them. I hear great things about it. Do you think maybe a different product from the same line might work better on your fur baby? Kelly :aimeeyork Zoeys Mommy :aimeeyork |

Aw!!!!! Thanks for the info!!!!! And I love anti snap on my hair! I am a hairdresser myself! And whe I 1st brought Luigi home, my vet told me to NOT use human shampoos! I did once, but she scared the crap out me saying that it would dry thier skin out and all that good stuff! So I never used it again. But I think I may give it a try again! I don't have this issue with my other Brasco! He has the BEST coat ever! Soooo smooth and soooo silky! And he has never had one matt on his fur or knot! Thanks! |
Well if your a hairdresser I don't need to tell you how great the products are. I use it myself too. I am one of those people always doing something to my hair, coloring and highlighting. I really need that anti-snap...lol! It would be fried without it. :p Kelly :aimeeyork Zoeys Mommy :aimeeyork |

I've heard it's a no no too but I find that Pantene conditioner works greate. It leaves Gus's hair shiny and softer than anything else I've ever used on him. And in the summer we spend alot of time in the pool so I use the leave in conditioner on the both of us after a dip. |
I spoke with a pet groomer about using human products on dogs, and she says that they use human products all the time in their shop which is not in PetSmart, but is in the back of a modern feed store with a setup kinda like PetSmart. She said that the modern human products are now so natural and pH balanced that they do no harm to dogs. I hope she's right. Personally, I use the human stuff sparingly, just because my Zoe is so tiny & I'm afraid she may react differently than larger dogs, but thought I'd post this information for those who may be interested. |
Luckily, my Yorkie never tangles, but one of my Mom's malteses had to be kept short because of constant matting even though she brushes them everyday. She started using a shampoo and conditioner called Maltese Secret she buys from www.malteseonly.com/cart. It has made quite a difference in her coat and is recommended for cottony coats. They also sell the dental product life for teeth. |
Well the pantene certainly should work. It makes my hair so soft and silky I can't do anyt hing with it. I always kept my late yorkie in a puppy cut, in the summer. I think it truley makes them look like puppies. |
Human shampoos are fine for yorkies. The only problem is they sting their eyes unlike dog shampoo so just be careful not to get it in their eyes. It might be possible to brush out the matts while the dog is wet and soaking in conditioner. I'd give it a try before giving up and cutting him short, although if it doesn't help continue to brush him daily until the grooming appointment because the tighter those matts get the shorter he will have to be cut. |

Speaking of purse... I should start a new thread about what Yorkie stuff is always in your purse! :D |
God gave me a Yorkie with silk hair (never tangles). He did this to make up for the Bichon he gave me. Have you ever tried combing a sheep (with twice the hair that a sheep has)???? Carol Jean |
1 Attachment(s) Muffie has worn a "modified Schnauzer cut" for years and it's so easy to brush. Here is a picture of her in that cut: |
