City just passed microchip law My city just passed a mandatory microchipping law for all dogs. Wanted to know if anyone has had a bad experience with microchipping? I think it is probably a good idea, but am a little nervous about having a foreign object placed in my baby. Is it painful? Where is it put in at? |
We are having it done to our Bassett when we have her spayed next month. My aunt had it done on her 2 dogs w/out a problem. It is in between their shoulder blades. :) |
Lilah was microchipped the other day. It was just a quick shot in her back and it didn't appear to hurt her. |
chip They are very simple for the vet to do..about the size of a grain of rice and they place it in the shoulder blade/neck area as a rule. It won't be long and all of us will have a micro chip planted in us also. LOL |
Out of several dogs I have had done it only seemed to bother one enough to let out a squeel....It is very tiny and is put in on the back of the like shoulder blade area. |

Edie has been chipped for 5 years. Hubby is next. :p |
I live in Ireland where now all puppies hake to be microchipped before you can register them with the ikc.I have to get 4 puppies done next week when they are six weeks old so will let you know how i get on |
No, it is no biggie. I would get it done anyway! I always wondering if they could find the microchip in Stomper because of all his hair! :D |
My dogs at it done at their spay/neuter so I dont know how painful it is. It has never bothered them though. It was put on their sholder blades. |
Wow, was there much discussion on this in your town before they passed this law? After reading all these stories on YT where pounds give dogs away and don't notify owners - I sure hope that if one of the pups in your town gets picked up that they do scan the dogs and CALL THE OWNERS! Hope that's part of the law. I'm not a big fan of chipping - because I would NEVER HAVE A CHIP PUT IN ME! But I adopted my dogs and it was probably at least 6 mths after I had them, that the gal I got them from mentioned the dogs were chipped. My vet thinks it is the way to go - I just wonder if there could be any long term effects? And how long micro chips were studied before they started giving them out. So much of what is in our environment later turns out to be hazardous - but there's no use worrying about any of it! LOL |
I don't remember there being any discussion. They have also passed a per litter fee, I think it's about $85.00 and to advertise you must post your litter registration number with the ad. I live in El Paso, Texas which borders Mexico and I'm sorry to say there are many irresponsible pet owners here. I guess the pound at least wants to fine the people if they don't bother to pick up their dogs and they have to euthanize them. The good thing is it brought the price way down. Now you can get a dog microchipped here for $25.00, and a rescue group "Pet Guardian" is doing it for $10.00. |
i had bunjee microchipped earlier this month. he let out a loud yelp when he was chipped but was otherwise unharmed. the microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and it is injected just under the skin between the shoulder blades. one thing to prepare yourself for is that the needle is HUGE. the same size needle and chip is used on my 5 pound yorkie as it is used on a 50 pound lab. i tried to feel around his neck and back for the microchip the other day. i can't even find it anymore. i might take him over the to pound one day just so that they can scan him and double check its viability. since tags can be removed, and yorkies are so popular, i think it's best to have some non-removable way to identify and prove that your furbaby is yours. i thought the option of tattoos is a little too time consuming and may be painful for my puppy. microchipping was fast and easy. |
forgot to add, you should also make sure you pet's microchip is registered not only at the local shelter, but also on the national registry. |
All my dogs have microchips . |
