Could she have a heart attack? I have written before about how fortunate I am in that my 3 1/2 year old Yorkie hardly ever barks. I have had her almost a year, and she has probably barked 20 times (or so I thought). She is the perfect Yorkie. I have started to tape record her while I am gone. She is hardly ever alone, as my parents grandog sit alot. Ends up she she pants non-stop, and barks constantly. She gets so worked up that it breaks my heart. Unless I set up the recorder myself, I would never believe that this was my girl barking. I think she could be doing harm to her nervous system, or possibly have a heart attack. Does anyone else have this problem, and what can I do? I am going to call the vet tomorrow to see if she can take a mild sedative, or something, but thought I would ask her before I call. Thanks. Oh, poor Sadie! We've videotaped Yoda before and just watched him sleep the whole time, until we come home and then he gets excited and barks. I have never heard of a Yorkie barking so much while the parent is away. I hope your vet has a solution or perhaps another member. This may not be the solution you are looking for, but have you thought about getting her a brother or sister? |
Home Alone Yorkie... Here are a few things I would suggest. I hope they might help. When coming or going, just do it. Try not to make a Big deal about it. Leave a TV or radio on. An old shirt of yours with your scent. Supply entertaining toys, Kong, ect... I wish you the best of Luck. I feel sorry your yorkie is so upset when you leave. :( |

they are older and not up to two dogs. I don't blame them. They are so in love with Sadie, that they say I am very lucky as she is perfect. The three of us were shocked when we listened to the tape. We don't want to leave her alone at all now. |

I never make a big deal out of leaving, and always leave pleasant music on. She has her favorite pillow and baby blanket, as well as a larger blanket. She is confined to a large laundry room if I am gone for more than 8 hours, which is very seldom as my parents take her then. If I am gone less than three hours, and she is alone, then I give her full run of the house. She has never chewed on anything, and does not like toys at all. I put peanut butter inside of a Kong, and she won't touch it. If I give her peanut butter off of my finger, it is gone in seconds. I will still call my vet tomorrow, as this really bothers me. Thanks. |
Bless you :) I'm so sorry you are so upset. It sounds like a bad case of separation anxiety alright. I hope you find a solution that works for you and your little pooch. |

Truthfully, I hate being away from her as well. A real wimp. LOL |
I don't think that loving your yorkie makes you a wimp hon :) Just big hearted! I don't think there's a member in here that hasn't felt what you feel for your little one at some time or another. It's called LOVE :) Your in good company on YT, that's for sure :) |
When I first got my Gracie we had a solid month that she had someone home with her. The beauty of getting her in between semesters at school. When I had to return to work I felt horriable so I set up the old video camera. Guess what she carried on for like five minutes and then passed out and slept the rest of the time.......needless to say that eased my guilt a bit :) |
Bless her heart. Jolene hates being alsone as well, she mopes and hides under the bed. We are considering a playmate for her as she didn't do this when she had yorkie pals. |
Kate Kate certainly has a terrible case of sparation anxiety. I would speak to the vet about a medication..not something to sedate her, but help with her anxiety..prozac. Dr Fox, the vet who is oppose to so many vaccines, and meds actually say Prozac very much needed for the health and well being of many dogs. gOOD LUCK |
You might also ask your vet about Rescue Remedy and the DAP diffuser. |

I called the vet this AM, and his ass't. said they do not like to sedate (I used that word when I called) animals. She suggested using a crate. I told her that I used to confine her to the laundry room, and now let her roam the entire house because she even got anxious being confined in that room, which is medium sized. Before medicating her, she said to confine her to a crate. She states 8 hours is fine, and just put water in it, no food. I have a crate and only used it one night when I first got her. She was an adult when I brought her home. I will give this a try, and I made a note of your recommendation just in case I need to go further with this issue. What do you think about this 8 hour crate confinement? I thought one should never crate an animal for more than a few hours, but I am no expert at this. Many thanks. |

Everyone: I just want to thank all of you for your great input. Instead of replying to each of you, I summed it up in my reply to YorkieRose. In the meantime, I think I will start a new thread to see if anyone else can give me more info. on the use of crates. This is something I will try, before medicating. Many thanks. Great group here. |
