Bald Butt Our new baby Lyric is 9 weeks old. As we were walking out the door with him we noticed that above his tail and the base of it were bald. The rest of his back hair did a good job of hiding it before. The owner said that it looked like it was shaved for a skin scrape because it looked like it was starting to grow back already. My vet said that it may have been his momma that licked him until his hair fell out, trying to get him to poop. Has any breeders or anybody with mommas and babies seen this before? He's not itchy at all and none of his other fur seems affected. Thanks for your insight! |

The people I got my Bunny from shaved her butt area bc she had gotten into her dog food that she had for her older dogs and it made he have runs... But as long as the vet said it was ok, I would not worry to much over it... |
Shaved butts are so much easier to care for in pups. The poop doesn't get stuck to them so they get the babboon butts. :p I just shaved my pup's bums the other night and they're pretty bare back there! |
Actually, it sounds a little off to me. Mainly because the breeder didn't know about it. It means at some point it was bald and I can't imagine not being aware of it if it were in a litter of mine. There is so much care and handling involved. Secondly, the mother hasn't been stimulating that pup for a LONG time. End result though is that the hair is growing back and everything is probably fine. I'd keep an eye on it just to be sure and make sure no other spots appear anywhere else. |
if it was shaved or scraped for skin testing, maybe she is having some dry skin problems? I would go get yourself a very good shampoo and conditioner. I HIGHLY recommend Tropiclean Oxy-Med Shampoo and Conditioning Treatment. Even if it isn't dry and itchy skin where he's chewed the so much that the hair fell out, the shampoo and conditioner is a great one to use ANYWAY. It is what we use in our groom shop for dry/itchy skin. But if after treating it that way it doesn't start growing back, I would recommend taking your baby to thevet and seeing how it goes. Let us know how it works out! |
Also, have you thought about allergies? it is very common for dogs to develop allergies to certain ingrediants in foods, topical things, or even just the environment. |
Thanks for the shampoo advice. I was looking for a new one. I asked my vet if it could be allergies but she said he's to young to have allergies. Yeah I'm just gonna watch it really good. Thanks all!! :) |

Did you actually buy your baby from the breeder or someone else? If you actually went and picked the puppy up at the breeder, there is just something that strikes me as odd...JMO If I had a puppy with a bald butt and I didn't clipper it, whick I do most of the time with my adults and puppies for sanitary purposes, you can bet I would know about it. The other posts have some very good possibilities...Did I miss any suggestions that it could be anal gland problems and the puppy scraps its butt on the floor til the hair wears out or falls out? |
