Need your opinion on a new pup... Yes, I will be getting a new pup soon, but not super soon. Probably end of summer or so. But I wanted to do some research before hand. So I had been wanting another female, for Coco. I spoke to Coco's breeder and she has her parents. She loves me so much as a mommy to her pups, she would be willing to breed them when I'm ready (if possible still) for a biological sister. I just like Coco's genes (health, size, personality, demeanor and appearance) which is why I thought I could get her a biological sister. But more recently, especially since hanging out with Jennette, I've been thinking about getting a male dog. I've never had one so I don't know if I would be getting myself into more work with a male vs. female. I got really lucky with Coco and she's sooooo good, but I don't think all females are like her. Even her biological sister could be complete opposite. So my first question 1.) should I get a female or male companion for Coco? either one would be spayed/neutered. What can I expect from a male dog that is different from female? 2.) What is a good boy name if I choose to get a male? I have girl names galore. |
We have a female yorkie (Cairo) and a male minpin (Tucker). The combination is just great. The owner of Cairo's dad has 2 females and 1 male and in their house the older female is quite dominant and does not always get along with the younger female, but the male gets along with both of the girls hust fine. So from personal experience, I would say to get a male. As for names, I've always really liked the name Spike. It just sounds so tough. :) |
I say get another little girl! I love girls! When I have a baby or babies someday I want all girls! My poor hubby would be so out numbered! |
nobella, im so happy for you, wow wee i cant believe your getting another puppy.... how exciting... if i were getting another one, i would get a girl. thats just my opinion. boys tend to mark their territory too much,, i had a male dog, a rotty, and boy was it bad.. its up to you...sweetie, good luck male or female...cant wait to see the new puppy |
I read that it is better to get a male if you have a female but I probably would stick with another girl. I don't want to deal with marking and it seems like a lot of males do that (neutered or not). Having a dog in a belly band all the time (especially when visiting other homes) doesn't sound like fun. And how do they use wee pads if they are at the lifting leg stage? Am I overthinking the pee pee thing? Probably. Lucky you...a new baby to look forward to! |
I'm so confused. Coco gets along with anything that looks like it could be breathing. I'm just worried if I got another female, the new pup might not be quite as nice as Coco, because females tend to be a little more feisty I hear. But then males are territorial, so it's a toss up, but they would get along better with Coco. I love girls as well but lately I've been wanting a boy. I feel like a mix would be better but I'm not sure... Thanks Gina! My boyfriend, the professed nonanimal lover, is now completely in love and smitten by Coco (even got her V-day stuff and a card). He thinks it would be great to have another little Coco running around, plus it would be helpful for me, because she would have a playmate. So I'm exicted. Shelby'smom, my concern is about marking as well as barking (rhyme). Coco never barks, unless someone is at the door. But if I was to get him neutered early I don't think he would get the urges and he wouldn't be learning it elsewhere because all of my friends have female dogs, except Max. |
That's so great that you're seriously considering getting another pup for Coco to play with :) I think that every situation is different, so maybe when she has the pups and they're old enough, you could go see them. Maybe one will come to you, and you'll just know this is the one? Boy or girl, I think you'll be fine either way. I love my boy, Miko! He's the biggest sweetheart and he loves to play, but he also loves to cuddle. We're going to be getting him a playmate sometime in the summer also, and I THINK we're getting a girl so we can experience having a boy and a girl. |
Well I have a male and a female and they get along great. My male does not mark. He was neutered at 7 months. When I get another one I am getting another female. |
Congrats on your decision! I doubt it will make a big difference if you get a girl or a boy, I have just always thought opposite sexes got along better....Now that I think about it, hum....is that true regardless of the species? |
That is so exciting!! I've been told that it is better to get them a playmate of the opposite sex, but I really dont' know. I was looking at getting Zeus a sister, but his breeder ended up having a litter of all boys! :( I just love my little Zeus to pieces and can tell you that we've never had problems with him marking, chewing things, etc. His only problem is that he can't stop giving kisses! :p |

I think if you have a good breeder you have the tough part taken care of. Once the pups are big enough to see maybe you can get a feel for a personality that will mesh with Coco. A friend of mine got a second female...even let her first dog "pick her out" didn't work out too great b/c the second one is dominant. she tries to control everything and her first dog is sweet and submissive. sort of like a second child, we don't know if they will get along and play like we imagine. seems like most people with 2 on YT are happy they have 2? Maybe it's time for you to do a poll :D |
Nobella :) As far as the marking goes, not all male dogs mark their territory. If you get them neutered in time, they will not do this...There are even females I know that mark their territory, so it all just depends :) I don't think males bark more than females...Miko rarely ever barks, so I think that also depends on the dog. Miko is also 100% potty trained to puppy pads. |
