Fact or myth? I was talking to one of my co-workers about TeeJay and she said that I sounded a bit obssessed with him (something that I wont disagree to). But what really got me ticked off was when she said that I shouldnt be too obssessed with any dog because if they havent seen you in a week then they forget who you are completely. Now my question is, is this true? I've never been away from TeeJay for that long. I really dont think what she stated is true, but I've been wrong many times before, so any input would be greatly appreciated! |
She couldn't be more wrong!!!!! |
She's wrong. They won't forget you in that time. That's what is so cool about dogs, they even forgive you being gone that long... lol. |
I've only left Pippa once and although she was excited to see me initially she was also quite cool with me for for about 5 hours!!! Jake has been left many a time and he sulks badly but only to me. When we come back from holidays he greets everyone but me!! He totally ignores me for a bout 3 hours. I dont think dogs forget you that quick but i'm sure if looked after and pampered for months by someone else they would happily settle with them. |
No WAY. I went to my son's wedding and was gone a week. Both my girls waited by the door. They slept there and were alert to any noise...I know this because my husband was home and he felt terrible they were so sad. When I got home - I was smothered with kisses for hours....they practically threw a yorkie PARADE. There's no way a dog will forget someone they love. |
Yeah I knew she was wrong! I know that under different circumstances, there may be a chance that your dog may react differently towards you after being gone for so long, but I dont think they ever truly forget who you are. Thanks guys for the quick feedback! |
I agree there is no way that is true. The lady that raised Chloe cuts my husbands hair every 2 weeks and she remembers her very well as soon as we pull into the parking lot she starts going nuts. She cant hardly wait to get in there and give her kisses and as soon as we walk in that door she runs over there to her! |
WHATTTTTT??? Heck no, my sister had a schnauzer that went with his daddy after a break up 8 months ago. Well about 2 weeks ago we went to visit his new puppies (he is a daddy :) ) and he even remembered me! He was so excited to see us and he wouldn't let us pay any attention to the new babies, and he just wanted to give me lots of kisses and sit in my lap. Then he went through all his tricks just like we used to. So no that lady doesn't know what the heck she's talking about!!! |
dogs I have never found it to be true when I boarded. Some stayed as long as 6 months and when their owner returned they were not always "over the moon", but were happy to see them..lots of love and kisses from some, others were "ticked" off and decided to punish the owner..make them beg for love..but they knew exactly who their owner was..LOL |
My x was gone for 4 months and when Gracie saw him pull up in the driveway she almost busted through the window to get to him. Trust me, they never forget the ones they love! If he were to show up again 5 years from now I know that Gracie would still remember him and be just as excited to see him. |
When I was a kid ..my mom gave my dog away to someone in a town about 8 miles away..He was with the new people about 8 months. He got loose from them and showed up at our house. It took him a week to make it back home but he did. Needless to say the dogs stayed with us after that.. until he died of old age. So, No.. they don't forget you. |
I have been away from my girls for about 3 to 4 weeks and when I got home they know that I was there mother and the same with the kids. I dont think that they will ever forget who there mother and father is. We are they ones that do all for them and they would know best....... ;0) |
When I first moved away from Newfoundland to Alberta, I could not take my dog with me, but as soon as we had bought our house we shipped him out, it was a year later. I do not know who cried more me or him, he was so excited he peed all over himself and over me, so no they do not forget the ones who treat them well. |
She couldn't be more wrong! Let me start off by saying my Alaskan Husky timberwolf cross, Socks, NEVER forgot me. He has gone to live with my brother once and my mother now. I can't afford to feed him, but I wanted him with family so I could continue to visit him. When he sees me, he gets SO excited. It's like he's a puppy all over again and gives me enough kisses to make up for the ones I've missed. My toy poodle, Murphy, also NEVER forgot me. I'd be gone doin my thing (I was a teenager), and if she'd run off while I was gone... all I had to do is call for her a couple of times and she'd come runnin. I think at times I was gone a lot more than I was home, but she knew I loved her... and she loved me. The thing is, dogs have a better sense of loyalty than we, as humans, do. They love us unconditionally with all our faults. They never forget our scent, our voice, or our behavior toward them (whether good or bad). |
Yea right, they know who is who. My cousin comes out a few times a year, and Princess knows exactly who she is, no question about it. :) :) :) |

Dogs don't forget their owners THAT easily. Before I had my furbie, my family and I used to dogsit a beagle. His name was Snoopy. His family would go overseas for vacation and he'd stay with us. We loved Snoopy and he loved food. He was a dog that's totally food-motivated. He'd be happy where there's food. That was for the first couple of days. By the fourth day of their seven-day trip, he'd sit by the door, watching, waiting. He'd cry and whine. He even stopped eating! When his family came back, he was jumping, pawing, just in cloud-nine. This happened the first time we dogsat him and many more later. No, dogs don't forget their owners. |

I'd say your friend is a little jelous that you have such a good relationship with your puppy. I have a friend kinda like that. Some people just think of dogs as dogs and not as actual little people. We all understand your relationship because we all have them with our own pets. Don't worry about it ;) |
LOL sorry, but that REALLY made me laugh!! Tell your friend that she might forget you in time, but your fur kid NEVER will ;) |
false well that is false most deffinitly. the last time i saw china before i picked her up was four months and when i got there to get her she ran right up to me and wanted me to pick her up so who ever told you that was wrong. |
Definitely MYTH!!! There have been many stories of dogs lost for years who find their way back home or who see their owners again and remember them. Like someone else said...they may settle in to a new home and love those people too but they'll never forget the others they have loved and who loved them!! Puppy love is forever!!! |

My Bichon is shy - especially so around any new person who comes to the house -- but he never forgets anyone he has met before. I had a girlfirend come over whom he met over a year ago -- and he was thrilled to see her again. She got a lot of jumps and kisses when she first walked through the door. There is no doubt that he remember her. ===== He does this all the time - so I know he remembers people very well. So - how in the world could a dog forget their owner (the person they especially love) in just a week???????? Carol Jean |

I adopted my 2 Yorkies from my daughter's dance teacher 2 yrs ago and whenever I take them to the studio they definitely remember their original owner and her mother. When I go out of town the dance teacher's parents still take the Yorkies for us - which is so great, no boarding fees and they get to go back to the house where they once lived and I know they are being loved. But, number one they remember their previous home and the people there, and they are always excited to go over there. But the welcome I get when I return, can not be replaced!! Bubba and Roxy get so excited and my face is wiped clean with kisses :kiss2:  and they practically dance to the car - just so we can get home for more loving. :heart to And I've left them several times for about 8-9 days at a time. These little babies have wonderful memories about all kinds of things. ;) :aimeeyork :) Yorkiesmiles |

Ask your co-worker if they can read dogs' minds? |
When I was about 18, I joined the Army. We had a little Jack Russel at home. I was gone for 6 months at a time and he ALWAYS remembered me when I came home on leave. He'd be outside the front door, looking like he had a big smile on his face and wagging his whole butt!! I loved that little guy! He lived to be 17 years old. He was such a character. He used to sit on the Zebra crossing and wait for the cars to stop for him! The local butcher used to give him bones bigger than he was :D LoL! I don't believe that dogs ever forget the ones they love. I don't think there's a time limit on it either. :D |
Dogs are cute! I left my 3-year-old dog for the first time and was gone for two weeks. It was the first time in her life she hadn't slept with me. I can't describe how much I missed her and couldn't wait to get back home. When I got home - she was so excited and went absolutely crazy, jumping, kissing me, running around, and so on. This lasted for about ten minutes and then she got in her favorite chair with her favorite toy and acted like I had never been gone. Are we taken for granted or what!!!!!! Carol Jean |
