Dog Clothes opinions... Okay, so this is a topic of much debate between my fiance and I. He says that dogs shouldn't have clothes on, that they'd be miserable and it's a disturbing trend. I think that it's adorable, some dogs LOVE being dressed up if they're introduced to it properly and sometimes it's neccessary because of weather. I figured I'd ask an experience group of yorkie owners their opinions. Thanks in advance for the insights! Deirdre |

My puppies do not use clothes all the time, but when I dress them they enjoy it!!! Anyways, the look adorable :) !!!!!!!!! |
I have a question regarding the clothes. I ordered Zoey several tiny shirts online since she is so small. When I put the shirt on she wasn't overly excited and hopped around little instead of walking normal. Is it because shes not used to it ?? Has anyone had their baby act like this ??? |
Peawee doesn't dress in clothes all the time, but he enjoys it when he does. He gets cold and he loves his sweaters. When I try to take them off he tries to run away. |
I think sometimes it's necessary. If it's 32 degrees outside and you have a dog that is shaved(like my own), they need something to keep them warm. regardless of size and breed. Every dog will be cold at some point in their life and as their gaurdians it is our duty to keep them warm and prevent that as much as possible. Tigger didn't like it at first but then after some persistance he loves them. His recent outfit was a blue hoodie. |

my babies were brought up on clothing and absolutely LOVE it! Especially in the winter, Bounce will look at me like I am absolutely nuts if I ask him to go potty out without his jacket on. He even prefers to sleep in his pajamas in the fall/winter b/c they keep him warmer when he chooses to venture out from under the covers and sleep on top of the comforter. Now yes, there are some dogs who hate clothes and would rather die than wear them. So long as they're introduced to it in a friendly approach (lots of treats and praise!) usually they love it. Especially once they realize, "omg I get sooo much attention with my clothes on!" My little girl already prances around like she's hott stuff with her clothes on. And at first, Bounce walked like his legs were broken, but then he figured out, "oh...this is so not restricting me" and runs all over the place in his sweaters. Just remember, lots of treats as soon as the garment goes on! and tons of praise! Our furbabies thrive on pleasing us and knowing that we are proud of them for something is the greattes reward they can ask for from us besides our love. |

The store bought ones for Baby Blessing wouldn't fit right so I decided to start sewing for her, she likes the sweaters I knitted for her, I came up with my own patterns and designs on her knits and they are not restrictive on the legs and she loves them. Cassie would never wear them and would squirm herself out of one every time, I was always afraid she would hurt herself so I gave up the idea, maybe if I had made them like these she might not have minded. I think its a neat idea, I use to get up a lot to check on Cassie to make sure she would be covered at night since we kept the furnace down low. I have resized some of the patterns that I bought and am looking forward to making PJ'S for Baby Blessing :-) she loves to be covered at night and to be kept warm so I think she will like them. I don't like dressing up Tiger, perhaps because he is a boy?! Who knows . . . at the most I think I just like bows (when I get my girl) . . . of course Tiger has one sweater to protect him from the cold . . . and since does not like it, I don't think his wardrobe will be any bigger . . . He likes to run "free" . . . . |
clothes romeo is a boy and i dress him for warmth. it's harder to find boy clothes. my little guy shivers without clothes. it's about 30 degrees outside and we just came back from our late nite walk. i couldn't imagine taking him out without a coat.we prefer fido fleece. it's functional and cute. i live in an old victorian and it's pretty drafty inside. he wears sweatshirts or t-shirts inside. he tolerates his clothes, but he is happy to take them off too. :aimeeyork |
Yorkies get cold too, just ask AlaskaYorkie!! His little Eddie and Jack love they're winter warmies. There are lots of owners in here who can tell you about the cold v's Yorkie :D And it's not just a weather thing, If I could get hold of clothes, Mitzi would be in some too! Especially in the rain!! Most dogs are happy just being pampered, they don't seem to care what they wear or dont wear as long as they are getting the attention they want, lol!! I guess it's a matter of personal choice. I don't see any harm in it at all. :D |

I hear a lot of snickers from friends and family about doggie clothes, including one guy a couple days ago who said indignantly "That's why they have fur." But my answer to him was, "yeah, and tropical parrots have down feathers, but try putting them outside in temperatures under 60 degrees and see how well they fare." YorkieTalk has taught me that clothes for warmth are great and clothes for style are cute. And I don't see anything wrong with either. |
My girls LOVE LOVE LOVE wearing clothes....They dance and strut around like they're saying....."AREN'T WE TOO FREAKIN CUTE"? ;) and my youngest Cheri gets chilled outside....The minute I put a sweater on her... she practically smothers me in kisses and ends up playing in the yard having a ball....no shivering...just playing. So...in my house....Clothes serve 2 purposes. Cuteness and Warmth :D |
I love dressing Jewels. I have all kinds of dresses and sweaters and bows to match. I just bought Chachi his first shirt and it looks cute on him and he loved wearing it so i am going to buy more. |
Pita walks with her backend all sideways when i put a dress on her that touches her butt! She gets used to it after awhile tho. Your baby will adjust too. I have a cute story about dog clothes: My daughter recently rescued a dog, Ellie, from the pound, not a yorkie, but she's a medium sized (27 lb) dog. Anyway one day we had just put a cute lil dress on Pita and Ellie snapped at her! We couldn't figure it out. The next day we bought a Ellie a pink bandana, she started prancin around like a show dog! It was so obvious she loved it! So we bought her a pink coat at Petsmart and the minute we put it on her she perked right up! We tried to leave at one point when she didn't have it on and she went and got it! She has not snapped at Pita again, we think she was jealous and wanted clothes of her own! This dog has plenty of fur and does not need clothes, she doesn't even look all that cute in them but she obviously LOVES to dress up! I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see the instant change in her attitude with a pink, it has to be pink, shirt or bandana on. |
I guess I am alone here but my Nikko HATES clothes!! I only force him to wear clothes for warmth but it is a struggle to get them on. I have to bribe him with doggie bacon and he still squirms and growls. Once the coat or sweater is on, however, he is fine and they don't seem to bother him. I have two coats, one that is a ski jacket/vest with no sleeves and the other is a parka with sleeves and a hood. For some reason he despises the parka and the sleeves are a nightmare to get on him. I only do this in the winter to protect him from the cold and even though I think doggie polo shirts are adorable, I won't subject him to it when it gets warmer because I know he hates it so much. |
Dennis just loves his shirts but hates his coats, I think because of the noise the Velcro makes and the fact they just don’t fit well. When I show him a new shirt he goes nuts wanting me to put it on. My friend has a Boston and he wears boots and hoodies and when he wants to go out will go get them. It is just to funny! |
I really don't care for dresses on dogs. Sophies does wear coats and sweaters outdoors when the weather warrants it, and because I live in an old house that can get drafty in winter, she wears a tee-shirt around the house and PJs to bed when it's really cold outside. Otherwise, no dresses or cutsie outfits. Reminds me of circus dogs, IMHO. |
Punkin loves her sweaters and her t-shirts. I think she loves the softness of them. She has one sweater that she loves the most and she helps us get it in her :) She hates her rain coat- but to be fair it is a little big and sometimes she steps on the edges. I'm going to try and alter it. Our vet said that she should definitly have a warm sweater on in -5 celius and below and at 0 it's a good idea. |
Clothes My husband also objected to putting SugarDaddy in clothes, but he changed his tune when he saw how cold SugarDaddy got. He has a sweater, that is too big... he'd like it alot more if it fit right. He also has a fleece jacket thing. He loves that. It's so warm and he isn't shaking from the cold. Most often he falls asleep within 15 minutes of putting it on!!! He's not fond of the diapers though!!! He HATES them!!! |
My yorkie, chloe likes to wear clothes. My boxer doesnt even if its freezing outside. SO I never put anything other than collars or scarves on my boxer(she loves wearing these items) and I always dress up chloe. Tink is iffy on things. I usually only have her modeling clothes for pics or wearing them if its cold or she needs a harness, or special occasions. She always wears a necklace though. Chloe knows she looks good in clothes. And tink and penny know they look good in neckwear and they all prance around happily when they get a new item. SO it just depends on your dog. |
Miko loves to wear clothes...When he sees me take out his clothes, he comes up to me and sits patiently while I dress him. He gets so excited. He doesn't wear clothes everyday by any means, but he does when I want to keep him warm or if I want him to look stylish. LOL |
