Help.Yorkie goes mad when she sees squerrels Our three year old has recently started chasing squerrels, she just goes mad. We really need help. When she runs after them she is on a mission and will not respond to anyone. She goes til she wears herself out Can anyone help us? Peanut Butter's Mom |
I would love to see the answer for this because I have the same problem but its with any ball. She actually becomes a demented demon dog. Its not pretty. You have the extra worry of your baby running out in the open. I am not sure what causes them to become so fixated on an item. Roxie was out one morning and the child across the street had a ball. She made a bee line to it and it took 4 of us 5 minutes to catch her. She will continue on- nose to the ball, growling, barking and spitting fire. Then pick it up and run- only to drop it and continued on her way.She will not hear you or see you for that darn ball. It is sad because I shouldn't have to hide all balls from her. Any suggestions? |
I hear you and know what you're talking about - We have 2 squirrel nests in the back yard and the squirrels play with both my girls but Cheri gets OBSESSED - the squirrels actually throw stuff down on her and get her to race around the yard...it's like a game now and Cheri waits for her friends every day... When I call her - she just totally ignores me....I have a video of her climbing a tree trying to get to the squirrell...she actually made it 4 feet off the ground one day....I had to get her out of the little tree cause she was scared lol !! |
Squirrel Chasing My Yorkie PJ just loves to chase squirrels. We have about 5 that frequent my backyard and when I let PJ out he bolts after the squirrels until he has chased them up a tree. Also when he sees them through a window he tires to go though the window after them. |

Mine do the same thing. I don't think that there is anything you can do to get this instinct out of them. It's their nature. |
I certainly would expect a Yorkie to go beserk if they can chase a squirrel. They were bred to chase and get these small animals. And, I am sure that nothing can stop them once they're on a chase. Carol Jean |
We have the same problem here. We moved from a "neighbourhood" (as much as a neighbourhood you can get here) to a little spot somewhat out of town when Chloe was almost one. This place is surrounded by trees so in the summer its really bad for birds, squirrels ect. My dad added a deck on to the second floor of the house and made sure he made it puppy friendly. She cant run off after squirrels, and not many animals can get up (shes usually just out and in anyway, except if someones out there with her). Squirrels have attempted to climb it but we are always watching her so they never manage to get up. For the back of the house (almost all forest) we dont let her go out unless someones out there with her and even then shes always on a leash. |
Mine love/hate squirrels. But they just run them up our tree. Don't have any advice for you, though. Best of luck! |
Be careful of squirrels around dogs and cats, our vet told us that the enzymes from a squirrels teeth and mouth can make domestic pets quite sick. Our friends cat got bit by a squirrel and a large cist formed around the bite area and had she not taken her to the vet promptly the vet said that there was a good possibility she could have died from the bite. i call romeo the squirrel patrol. he is obsessed. the first thing he does in the morning is hop up in his window seat and looks for squirrels. he barks and chases them from window to window inside. i used to think it was sooo cute. now he just wakes me up everyday barking at squirrels. he used to run around my yard chasing them everyday. he can't play out there anymore because of an owl that moved in. we had a very close call with an owl attack on him and me. he used to try to chase them up the trees. it was adorable. maybe he can chase them again one day. i need to find a way to owl proof my yard. i know he really misses his playtime in the yard. now he just gets walks. owls suck. |
Well, we don't have squirrels here. There are no small fuzzy tail type things for Mitzi to chase up trees. She is partial to a spot of bird chasing though :D She hides by the wall until they land on the roof then she goes mental! LOL!! She also chases cats, but I think she just wants to play with them. :D |
Roxy - aka The Squirrel Hunter - lives with me. I exist often in her world to let her in and out of the house between hunts! She doesn't always chase them and bark, she actually lays in wait, I've even seen her point like a big old hunting dog. lol She'll watch them quietly and then when they least expect it go after them. Her favorite activity may be treeing a squirrel and keeping them up there for as long as possible - this does often involve barking at the squirrel and definitely circling the tree. If Bubba goes out with Roxy for a squirrel hunt, he has no patience, he just charges after the critters. I laugh at how some of these squirrels are almost as big as little Roxy. I agree there is not a lot you can do about this - it is innate. Yorkies were developed to rid the world of rodents. They are doing what is natural - the best thing I try to do is not let her keep a squirrel trapped in a tree for too long. Sometimes I do have to go and pick her up when there is a squirrel in her sights. How could she come in when there is a squirrel invading her property ;) |

Got the same thing. Peyton goes outside and see them all the time..........then she is off. She is doing that with birds too. Very funny to see... |
Yeap, mine all do the same thing. When I say lets go out, I get 10 yapping little bundles of flying fur yapping loud enough to wake the dead. :lol tears And they all suddenly develop selective hearing along w/forgetfulness(like their names) I'm surprised my neighbors haven't called 911 yet, cause it sounds like someone is pulling the insides out of some poor dogs.LOL |
