Crates-Pee Pads-Outside...where's the bathroom? Hi again, It seems confusing to me (I'm sure it must be confusing to Annie and Susie) on what is the best way to housetrain our little 11-week Yorkies. Some say...crate is a must - leave them in about an hour then take them out, etc., others say don't leave them in the crate - leave the door open and use pee pads...and now we have them also going outside (about every hour). And then of course we have the linoleum floor ;) . When we picked them up...they were on newspapers and they ate their feces. When we brought them home...we started them on pee pads right away because they would eat and rip the newspapers We started taking them outside a few days later about every hour. They are in a penned in area of the kitchen (we have large kitchen), they have their crate and two pee pads. They sometimes use the pee pads and of course other times it is just on the floor - which I know is normal. Are we doing okay? I don't really want start a new regimine as to how they should go potty i.e., locked crate, doggy litter, etc. :Puppy: :Puppy: Thanks... Yorkie Love, Terra |
Hi Terra! I think you are doing great! They are still very young, but they will catch on. Everyone has different idea's, some work for them, but not for others, you just need to find the one that works best for you. :) Potty training is not easy, but it works. You have to decide where you want them to go, and start to train them there. When you see them go tell them good girl, and pass them a small treat. If they start to go somewhere else, pick them up, and take them to the spot you want them to go. Let them know this is where we go potty. Sounds funny, but they do understand what we are saying. It takes time, but they do learn. Do you have a doggie door? When we put one in for Princess, I was shocked at how fast she learned. She even taught Poncho how to use it, who is a year older. There is hope!! Hang in there!!!! |
If your schedule permits I would recommend ONLY outside as a place to "do business." Dogs like to keep it simple. To help in establishing the concept of "outside" I would recommend something like this (see link below). We have been at it almost 2 weeks with our 14 week old and she already knows what the bells are for, though she sometimes has to be encouraged to use them. She definitely knows what "outside" means. http://www.poochie-pets.net/ |
I agree with Mustangbee. Pick ONE method....pee pads, outside whatever works for you. It's confusing to offer too many places when they're little. If you are home during the day, take them outside every hour, and say "your phase". I must've said go potty a bzillion times those first few weeks. Eventually they become able to hold it for longer periods. We had very, very few accidents inside. Also if you're going outside let me stress if your home has multiple doors outside, use the SAME door when you take them out. My first indication that Trace "got it" was him going to that door by himself. I did not try pee pads because I did not want to teach him to go inside but that's only my opinion and it works well for others. Good luck. I admit there were times when I thought....why the h-ll did I sign up for this? |
