Bell Training Has anyone trained thier yorkie to ring a bell to go outside? was it hard and do you still use it? |
My yorkie trained me to get up and down like a fool every time she moves :D That works in our house :D |
I just bought some Poochie Bells and we have just started the whole bell training process. I have seen quite a few people on here say that they have had a lot of success with this, so I am hoping we will have the same. Right now they are both still a little scared of the noise so I am not making them ring them yet. Instead, I just ring them a whole lot right before I take them outside as I am saying "Want to go outside?". They know what this means, so I am hoping that once they get used to the noise, they will pick up on the fact that if the bells go off, the door opens. |

I trained my Roxie to use the bell system and it works like a charm. I wasn't sure if it was going to work, but I brought a cheap bell from PetSmart and tied a ribbon to it and hung it from the door. I put cream cheese on the bell as an inticement to hit the bell and rewarded her each time. I progressed to opening the door each time she rung the bell and also saying "outside!" Then we progressed to "Potty". She can also Potty on command which is nice for those cold nights in San Diego ( :) ) To make a long story short- We were successful and I ended up ordering the Poochie Bell because they are so cute and look so nice hanging from the door. No accidents in 6 months and I can hear the bell where ever I am in the house. I love it! :p But I will admit I feel she does sometimes rings it for attention or just to see me get up! |
I 'made' some of those bells and so far my older dogs ignore it and it's hard to train 'me' to use them. But I want to try it with my new puppy so I'll be interested to see what every one has to say too. |

I'm gonna give this a go too :D |
We haven't been having much luck with it but we are still trying. I like the cream cheese idea. We'll give that a try. |
It does take time. Do not give up. They have to be able to connect -ring bell- to door open- to potty. This took at least a month of being consistent. Everytime she went out I would repeat the words- "outside" & "potty". Roxie is so funny because sometimes she will ring the bell and if you don't move fast enough, she will ring the bell harder and then turn around and stare at you as to say, " Move it!" Plus will ring it and when you open the door, she will actually stand there, sniff the air and then look at you as to say" Thank you, I was just checking the weather" and turn around and go back to what she was doing. |
I made some bells to use with Tiger. So far, not much luck, but we are still trying. There are several others on here that are using the bells quite successfully though. |
We use a bell tied on the back door. Joey quickly learned to use it and I wouldn't be without it! I take it with him when he has to go to the petsitter. |
Sounds like it would work. Think that I will try it with the little one that I have. LOVE IT!!!!!!! |
