Barking Katy is a 5lb yorkie and she's very proud of it... When Katy hears anything in the front or back of the house, she barks like crazy. We tell her no, then she then runs through her doggie door into the back yard and barks, we have to call her in to keep her quiet. This happens every night. We have closed the doggy door and then let her out when necessary, but, she always goes back to barking. Can you give us any suggestion on how to stop her from barking at every little thing. Try to put some pennies in an empty coke can and rattle it at her, they hate that and usually stop barking. ;) |

He's a Yorkie. He's gonna bark. Mattie barks when anyone comes downstairs, even if they have been downstairs once already. He barks when the lights get turned on. He barks when the phone rings. He barks when when the doorbell rings. He barks when he is playing. the only time he doesn't bark is when he had to go out. hehehe. We are trying to teach him he doesn't have to bark at every little thing, but it's not working. Unfortunately, it's the nature of the large beast trapped in the small body of the Yorkie. |
If you have only one dog, I recommend the "Barker Breaker". It is a small device with a button . You push the button when the dog barks and it emits a high-pitched sound that the dog doesn't like. You need to push the button very soon after the barking, so the dog associates the sound with the bark. I take Edie to the office, and in that environment she cannot bark to her hearts content. It has worked well for us there. I also tried the citronella collar. It works too. |
I haven't tried the button or the collar, but I am weary to try those because I can't hear what the sound emits and I don't know how bad/good it is. I wouldn't want to hurt my pup's ears because I don't know how it sounds... :confused: |

Katy's barking Thanks for all your suggestions, we will give them a try. She hates loud noises so maybe the penny's in the can will work. If not I will look into the collar. |
I feel your pain!! Nikko has gotten so barky its ridiculous. He barks at noises outside, he barks at the curtains, he barks if you lock him out of the bathroom (uh, hello, mommy needs privacy ;) ) he barks to get attention when we are eating, he barks when we leave him alone in the bedroom and he climbs on the bed but can't get down. He even barks when mommy puts him in the crate for a 5 minute timeout because he has been barking. At the end of the five minutes, he barks to let me know the timeout is over!! :D |
Yes - Yorkies are little barkers.....but many Yorkies (like mine) don't bark a lot. Yorkies -- like other breeds -and like, people, for that matter - have different personalities. Some are high strung - others are more laid back and bark less. Sounds like you have a "real little barker" on your hands. I certainly would try the "pennies in a can" thing. I have heard about that before and it has obviously worked for a lot of people. Good luck - I wouldn't want one of these little guys barking all the time either. Their bark isn't exactly a "quiet" one. Carol Jean |
