Litter Box training???? Hi everyone, It is me once agian with one of my many silly questions... :D I have seen on the boards several times people mentioning that their pup is litter trained. I am assuming this does mean like a cat litter box :confused: . So how would I go about doing that? I have looked through the post and didnt see anything on it. I think it would be nice to have that as an option as I am not to thrilled with the wee wee pad :eek: invasion as a permentant plan, and outside right now is not a great option. (Bridget isnt fully vacinated and I do not want to take a chance on her getting sick.) So could some one help me out with this? :) Thanks so much :animal-sm |
You would train them the same way you would train them to go on a wee wee pad but in the litter box. There are dog litter box out there for sale. The litter looks like pellets. Personally, it didn't work for me. I taught my 2nd yorkie to use the litter box(with cat litter). However, my first yorkie didn't like the idea so she would dig in the litter box and fling litter all over the bathroom floor. It was more trouble than it was worth. All my dogs go outside now. |
Yea its just like yorkieagility said. Like if Bentley has an accident on the carpet I will say no no and put him in the box and kind of push his butt down and say go potty in here or "the box" he picked it up very quickly. The primary reason we choose to do litterbox training was like if we werent home he would use that. But he doesnt go outside yet so we're hoping that once it gets nice out he will learn to go out. Anyways goodluck if you decide to do litter traning, its kinda funny for my still to see a dog go in the box but its easy to clean up and he likes it esp. when he gets some cheerios afterwards! |
Have you ever had a problem with them eating/playing with the litter? That's what I'm most afraid of. I haven't gotten my yorkie yet, but I've been going back and forth about litter box training or pee pads. Thanks! |
I have heard of some yorkies playing with it and/or eating it but neither of my 2 yorkies have ate it or played around with it. They just go in and do their buisness and look for their treat! I would suggest maybe putting pee pads underneath the box but start training them to go in the box. If you notice them eating the litter then remove the box and stick to pee pads but aleast then they will be in the same place they've been told to go. Goodluck with your new puppy! |
Kahula has been using the liter box with much success. However he does try to eat or play with the litter :eek: I don't get that. :confused: The pee pads underneath is a good idea sometimes he is too lazy to step all the way in. He may be getting too big for the box I chose ?? who knows. At least he not using the carpet. |
I have a brand new bag of dog litter from Petco along with the medium sized dog litter box just sitting in my closet because that is all gracie would do is play with the pellets and run around with them in her mouth. I couldnt leave her unsupervised with it which was the purpose. So I finally gave up with the dog litter and now she just goes outside on a schedule. I wasted 25.00 on the litter box and dog litter and all Gracie did was use it as a toy. Tried it for a week..and no luck :( |

we had a 3-yr old that was litter trained when she came to us. She used the box to go pee but never pooped in it. when we would leave her she would have full access to the litter box. If she was angry at us or if we left her too long she would put her head in her water dish and then proceed to put her face in the litter box. She did this about three or four times. What a mess.... :eek: I figured she was trying to tell me it was time to be groomed again. :) She would also pee right next to the litter box when she was mad us too. Defiant little booger she was! It worked well for the middle of the night or early morning when she just couldn't hold it - but I found it to be too messy. |
Litterbox training My Tucker was litter trained when I got him at 10 weeks and did well for a while when I had him in a playpen during the day but within a week he had learned to climb out of that so came the baby gate - he chewed through the plastic mesh to roam my bedroom all day. It has taken patience and lots of praise and cookies but just yesterday I came home to find NO PEE PEE accidents on the carpet YAY! I told him how good he had been for this and I swear he understood since I'm always saying "pee pee in potty box- Good Boy". He still doesn't poop in it though so we're working on that one. I was really excited by this option since I once lost a Yorkie who snuck through a gate my Dad forgot to close and was killed by a car. The only time I want him outside is on a leash when we're going somewhere or in a fence with me watching him like a hawk and watching for hawks! Dana :animal-sm |
