Walking I just wanted to ask one quick question about walking our furbabies. Do they actually need to be walked and if so how long and why? Is it cruel if you don't walk them, but they roam free all day and you take them out with you to places most of the time? PLease anyone..... |
Our boys have full run of the house all day and a doggie door to a large fenced, outside area but I still believe in walking them for a couple reasons. One, I'm sure they get bored staying in the same area day after day so walking gives them a change of scenery and some fresh air...not to mention all the exciting sights, sounds and smells they enjoy. Two...walking is good for me too so we get a chance to spend some quality time together and we get a little excersize while we're at it plus we get to socialize with the neighbors along the way. |
I have always heard you dont have to walk yorkies. They can get enough exercise from just being in the house. When he weather is nice I do walk mine though. They enjoy going on walks. |
Just as long as they get some type of exercise I think they'll be fine. Letting them run around and play is perfect for them. They're pretty high energy dogs, so as long as they're given the space to exercise they'll do it. They're not like the huge dogs that NEED a walk every morning. They also aren't as prone to becoming overweight as some dogs like pugs etc. |
you guys are the best Thank you all for the quick reply. I appreciate all yor help. I guess whenever I have the time I will walk daisy. Thanks again............ ;) |
I walk Mojo and sometimes carry him. Although in the colder weather (like it is now where I'm at), I walk on a treadmill. Mojo likes to run in the snow and chase the birds, so I think he gets plenty of run time in every day. We have wood heat and heat pump, so it is nice a toasty in the house all day.....I think it makes Mojo tired because he isn't has energetic when it is warm in here.....course, I am the same way.....in the cold weather, I stay in the house by the heat and get lazy! |

I totally agree! It is nice for them to get a fresh look at others scenes, people, dogs, birds, and smells. I also think that walks are something 'special' that they look forward to. |
According to the Dog Whisperer dogs need to be walked daily. It is excellent for their psyche, and they become better dogs. Before I began walking the kids, I could not get Surfie fully potty trained. After I began walking them within two days he stopped messing in the house. We have a very big yard that Tiki and Surfie race around, so exercise is not the problem. I’ve had nothing but positive results and they love it. So if can can take them for even short walks it will be well worth it. |
Heck with the dog, I enjoy a regular morning walk with my boys. |

You're welcome! According to Cesar (Dog Whisperer) it's very important you show your dog who is the leader of the pack. That would be you. He makes it clear that your dog should walk beside you with the leash above his neck with little slack for the beginning of the walk, and when you're halfway through the walk give him some slack to smell around and have some fun. If you let him/her walk in front they are in control, so try to not to let your furbaby lead you. Enjoy your walk! |
I take Mitzi out when I go, she's still having trouble with walking outside though. She just sits. LOL!! I have to buy a harness for her the next time I fly overseas and try that on her. Unless.... can someone take pictures of their doggy harness for me and e-mail them. Maybe I can make my own temporary version until I can buy one. That'll help me get her out sooner. I just don't like to pull on her leash, it might damage her. Anyway, we'll keep you updated on the out for walks problem. :) |
Mine go out every day. Pippa gets 3 walks as she comes to drop and pick up kids from school and then i take her and Jake out for long walk in forest!! Jake is getting on and cant manage 3 walks any more it makes him too stiff the next day bless him. But Pippa comes everywhere even if i'm not walking she has a bed in my car too. |
