Puppy Questions - Long
 

Hello Everyone:

Thanks for such an excellent resource for yorkie lovers. This is my first post but I've been lurking around here for several months learning tons of excellent info on the breed. Our family is acquiring a yorkie puppy next month from a breeder that I believe is reputable.

I have a couple of concerns though and would appreciate some input.

We went to visit the puppies this weekend for the third time since they were born six and a half weeks ago. We will be taking our puppy home at 10.5 weeks. Anyway, as we were leaving, I went to put the mother back inside the box with the puppies. The breeder told me that the mother wasn't feeding the puppies anymore. The mother dog was trying to jump out of the box so I took her out. Does all of this sound normal?

We are looking for a calmer puppy and noticed that one of the puppies was very quiet and content to just sit beside us quietly while her sibs were tearing around the house. This puppy's stomach looked quite bloated and round compared to the other two. Is that a sign of worms? The breeder informed me that she had just de-wormed them the day before. This quiet puppy was the active one just a couple of weeks ago and I am wondering if she is sick or if she is just turning into a really mellow pup.

I'm probably just a little nervous and overthinking things . Thanks again for any insights. Andy

To answer your first question- yes. When the babies get teeth, mom is more likely to not want to nurse.
Second question- Pass that lil puppy until he's been checked by the breeders vet. Something does'nt sound right to me :confused:

You will love it here! A momma dog is usually ready to leave those babies around 6 weeks...some dogs, a lot sooner. As far as that puppy you are talking about, I would have to pass until it was vet checked. A bloated belly and lethargy are not good signs. My Oscar was the most shy pup in his litter but let me tell you...he was putting on a show being so shy! There is not a shy bone in his body now. He absolutely loves everybody and NEVER meets a stranger. At that age, they can appear laid back and shy when they really aren't! At least that is what I have found to be true with all the puppies I have had thru my life. Oscar was the pick of his litter and that was according to the breeder due to his coloration, size and general conformation (as well as you can tell at 8 weeks!). Also, in Oscar's case, the word "Yorkie" and "calmer" do not belong in the same sentence! But that is o.k....I would not have him any other way...we just have to make sure he has lots of play time. I guess what I am trying to say is even if you get a calm pup the day you pick him/her up, don't be surprised to find a different dog a couple of days later living in your house...you just might swear someone pulled the old switcheroo on you!!! The puppy will change your life for sure...and for the BETTER!!!
