Need Some Help
 
My daughter, who is also a yorkie owner, just purchased a Chocolate Lab. She took her to the vet and he said that she has "slow blink response" in one eye. Her name is Riley and when she is tired or just wakes up her eye will roll back. My daughter's vet said that she could send her to a specialist. I talked with my vet and he said that it could be a sign of mental retardation. My daughter has only had her for a few days and is in LOVE with her. She(my daughter) did say that Riley sat back and didn't play like the other pups but she seems to be smart.

Has anyone heard of this? Any information that anyone has would be greatly appreciated. My daughter has NO intention of trading her in for another puppy. She made her choice with Riley and will keep her no matter what. My daughter's heart is aching as mine is for her.

First I'm sorry about your daughter's lab puppy.
If she's intends on taking on a special needs baby, then research is what is needed.
Just as long as she considers the puppy's quality of life.
Bugaboo would have been normally Put to sleep. But he had a strong will to live. But I always kept inconsideration his quality of life.
Her devotion to this puppy is wonderful and I commend her for that!
Please tell her we wish her and the puppy all the luck. :heart to

Thank you so much. I'm doing alot of research for her as well as she is. She is dedicated to Riley and will not let her down!

Im sorry to hear this, if she is worried about it ask her to go for a second opinion, we have a choc lab and when she was little it looked like her eyes were "loose" in her head at times, we also had her eyes checked and the vet asked us to come back when she turns one year so she could check her eyes again, they call it "mirror the eye" or something. She is now 17 months and its so much better. She gets red rings around her eyes when she's sleepy, also the cold weather affects her eyes.

Stacy at Sylvan's Yorkies might know. She bred choc Labs before.
I am sorry to hear about the puppy, but it does show that there are problems in every breed and we have to do so much research. I would have thought a larger dog would be fine. Please let us know as much as you learn about this condition.

I talked to my daughter just a while ago and she has spoken to a specialist. They said that they can't do any tests on Riley until she is 12 weeks old. She is 8 weeks now. The specialist wouldn't commit to any diagnosis at this time.

My daughter also talked with the breeder to let her know. The breeder offered her another puppy in exchange and my daughter said absolutely not! She just wanted to let the breeder know in case it was something genetic.

I have to say that I am very proud of my daughter(Cortney). Cortney said that if it was her human baby, she wouldn't love her any less and that's how she's looking at Riley.

Hopefully we will get great news but it looks as if it's going to take some time.

I appreciate all the support and kind words that I have gotten. It really does help.
