Questions Sorry to be posting already with questions but I need some advise. As you all may have read Shelbie had puppies (5) on Feb 10th. I have a heating pad on the bottom of her box with a towel over it. Well the question is why in the world does Shelbie keep taking it out. She will work and work till she gets it uncovered and then climbs out of her box and pulls and pulls till she gets it over the edge. Everytime she does this it upsets the puppies. They will be sleeping soundly and then she starts in. Is there a reason she keeps doing this? The heating pad is only on warm so I know it's not getting to warm. I even went and bought another one thinking that there was something maybe wrong with the other one. She does it with both. Question #2 is Shelbie is eating very well since having her puppies, I am cooking her meals. Chicken,Cottage Cheese, Eggs and basically anything I think is good for her. Problem is she now will not touch her puppy foood that the Vet recommended for good milk production. Should I continue cooking for her while she is nursing? She is still very thin to me. Thanks for any help or suggestions!! |
I think you should try posting this question in the Breeder section...you may get a better response :) |
Thanks I will post this in the Breeder section. Sorry I am new here and not sure where to post sometimes. Thanks |
I keep the heating pad UNDER just half the plastic whelping box so the mama can't move it or chew on cord. Just half gives her the option of moving to the cooler side if she's too warm. |
new mom Ditto...and add the dry to the mixture and mix it up well...you can soak it a bit and add it to the mixture, she can't get it out then..and alot of dry is not needed. |
Thanks for the suggestions Just wanted to thank you for the suggestions. I also got the replys in the Breeders forum. I am happy for any and all suggestions. This is tough work being a new Grandma, but poor Shelbie she really has her hands full. It seems like all she gets done is feeding and cleaning her new babies. |
I know I worried a lot when zowie had 5 pups. She seemed sooo thin. As long as she is eating, try not to worry too much. I agree that I would mix with her food. I also fed her moist puppy food, she just ate it a lot better, and that is what I wanted her to do. I bought a case at Petsmart. It was good for when the puppies started to eat as well. Nutrical is good, too. I would give her about 1" each day. |
