Eating Questions This is the best place I know for advice about my Yorkies, so maybe someone will know. I have two Yorkies, they each get 7 Tablespoons of food per day, one weighs 8.5 lbs, the other weighs 4.5 lbs. The fat one is always hungry, he gobbles his food and acts like he is always starving. He was not always like this, when he was a pup, he was a picky eater. Why is one like this? Should I be going to the vet over this? One is 1 year, the other (the big Yorkie) is 1.5 years. I have heard of thyroid possiblities causing this, would there be some other sign of this? Thanks, Joey |
I would talk to your vet...he could have something that is causing him to be hungry all the time!! I am not sure but maybe someone else can help you more.... |
You're Right about the thyroid diseases. They cause obesity. Some dogs are just chow hounds I have a few. But if you are really worried have your vet do bloodwork on his thyroid. :animal36 |
I wonder if your bigger yorkie needs more food than the littler one? Is he chubby as well as bigger? He may just be a bigger dog. Your vet will be the one to ask. |
My dogs certainly eat more than 7 tablespoons of food a day. And - I wouldn't assume your two dogs need the same amount of food. My little Yorkie eats a ton more than yours does - he is six months old, weighs 6 1/2 pounds, and is very slender. And - believe me - he would eat more if I gave it to him. But I have to draw the one somewhere - right? I wonder (with only 7 tablespoons of food a day) if your dog isn't rightfully still hungry??? That just doesn't seem like much food to me. The way I was taught to feed my dogs was -- feed them until they are full and walk away - then remove any remaining food - and don't feed them again until their next meal. I'm sure you'll get a lot more responses. Wait and see what they all say. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Wow I am lucky to get Cali to eat 4-5 tablesponns a day. She is 4.4lbs and has steadily gained weight. My 9 year old pom who weighs 12.5 lbs eats the same amount. The vet wants Maya to loose 2 lbs put I can't restrict her food any further she's always hungry now. I prefer the healthy eater to the picky one. I spend so much time trying to coax Cali to eat and Maya gobbles it down in a second. I am going to have Maya's thyroid checked as she is also very inactive. |
It all depends on the type of food. I give snickers 1/4 cup of royal canine two times per day and then a little wet to mix with it. He is about 4 lbs and 4 months old. |

Oh My ... I would think the larger Yorkie WOULD be very hungry with only 7 tablespoons of food a day. Just curious why you would be feeding a small yorkie and a larger yorkie the SAME amounts of food and why 7 tablespoons???? I'm surprised the larger yorkie isn't fighting the smaller yorkie to get his food also. Did the vet put them on this diet for a particular reason??? Just trying to understand |
My pom is 12 1/2 lbs and only gets 5 tablespoons a day and is overweight and the pupppy won't even eat 5 tablespoons a day so I thinkit's all individual on how much they eat. I offer food to Cali and she just isn't interested and the pom would eat all day if I let her. |
