Need help, advice - floppy ear 1 Attachment(s) Trevor has just turned 5 mo old. As you can see by the picture, he has a "lazy" ear. I have taped it a thousand times in the last 3 months, but it only stays up about 24 hours, then it goes down again. I've only kept it taped up about 48 hours at a time. He has just lost all his baby teeth, except canines, and should be about through teething. My question is, do I continue taping or should I just forget it. I really wanted his ears to stand I've read several places that if they aren't standing by 6 mo. I should forget it. Any advice? I love him, but am so disappointed that his ear won't "behave". I have the same problem with snickers, his one ear is floppy, my breeder said that is because of teething, their ears are made of calcium and they loose that when teething, she said I can give him some vanilla yogurt mixed with cottage cheese to help replace the calcium lost, it is suppost to be good for them too. She also said to massage his ear that is floppy and that might help. Im no expert but thought I would pass this along. His ears may eventually stand on his own. :D |
Chachi's ear flopped when he was getting his baby teeth in and then it just went up by itself. If you tape it you might want to shave the tips that might help also. |
massage the tips! i kept at it and stewie's ears went up by themselves and haven't flopped since (unless he's tired) |
Tia's ears are still floppy. One day they are up, the next down. I'm working on the massage thing - sounds like a good plan! |
my vet advised me to do the massage thing, i did it, and within a week or so Lefty's left ear fiiiiiiinally stopped flopping down when he sits. :p |
Shave the Hair? I've heard from my Breeder that you need to shave the hair on the back of their ears and pluck the insides of all hairs in the ear canal. I shave his ears myself but I'm too sqeemish to pluck the insides so I have my Vet. or Groomer do it! If I were you I would do all of it; more calcium in his diet, shave all the hair, massage and tape again as the last resort? Good Luck ;) |
Your advice has helped me too!!! Thanks! Sully is 7 mo. old now and has the SAME floppy ear problem. We've got it shaved and taped now but we're afraid it may be too late. Thanks for all this advice = it has helped me a whole lot too! Sully says thanks also, ruff, ruff! |
I will tell you what I did for my little Zoe'. Her left ear was totally flat and the other was standing high. The vet said the cartlidge could be damaged in her ear. I remembered years ago my niece's baby doctor told my sister to give her baby jello and gelatin mixed in her juice to strengthen her bones. Well I got flavored yogurt (which I knew she would love) and mixed sure-gel with it, about a table spoon per cup of yogurt and fed half one day and the other half the next day. Well withing a week Zoe's ear is standing up like it should. If this wasn't what helped Zoe', then it sure has fooled me. Good luck, it can't hurt. |
Same Boat Well now I guess I'm in the same boat, Abigail my husbands (in title only) 7 week old Female has "Floppy Ears". I did some research/reading and they say their ears should be standing between 6-8 weeks and if not by 12 weeks to shave and tape. Her Breeder already shaved them! So I will try the yogurt & sure Gel next and tape them as a last resort if nothing happens by 12 weeks? :confused: |
