Midori needs Curves When I went to the vet this last week for Dori's rabies shot she said that my baby was FAT!! (not her exact word) She is just shy of 6 months and weighs 6.3 lbs. I know that Yorkies can weigh that no problem, but the vet said for her frame she shouldn't have so much meat on her ribs. You should be able to feel their rib cage. So, She only eats about 3/4 a cup of food at the most a day (Eucanuba and/or nutro) and I don't really feed her any other snacks except bully sticks. What should I do? Should I cut it down to Feeding 2 times a day instead of 3? Are bully sticks fattening??! I would hate to feel like she was going hungry. How much (cup wise) do your babies eat a day? Normally I wouldn't mind if my pup was over weight, but the vet said it could lead to a disease.. (long word that started with a P that I can't remember for the life of me right now, I'm sure someone on here knows.) I wish there was Curves for dogs! I thought Dori got plenty of exercise, she loves to play in the snow, an gets a walk almost every day. She doesn't have a lot of hyper energy though except when we go to the vet , then she is a SPAZ! So should I try to exercise her more so she looses weight? GOT ADVICE ? Thanks!! |
I would definitely cut down to two feedings a day and exercise her. |
I think there are probably only two things that cause a dog to be overweight. 1) Too much food 2) Not enough exercise I think feeding less food is the easy one. It sounds like your pup does get some exercise. What has always caused my dogs to exercise more is "having another dog." My two (6 mo. old Yorkie - and 4 year old Bichon) run and play all over the house (mostly in the evenings) for at least an hour - on their own. I don't give my pup a lot of food. He gets wet dog food in the morning (not much) and has dry food out all day...which is there to keep him from starving because he really doesn't like it much. In the evenings, he generally gets people food (leftovers or other people food such as chicken, other meats, cheese, rice, eggs, etc. etc.) He also gets doggy treats. He is very slender. If dogs are like people - we can't expect them all to have the exact same build - but we should try to keep them from becoming overweight. Good luck! |
I love your answer!! I really want Yorkie brother for Mirori, but my hubby said No! Maybe this could be used as a ploy to get another one!! There is hope for me yet! |
I agree with the others...it sounds like she main just need some excerise and not quite so much food!! It does not take much for these little guys to put on some weight....I would try walking more, or to find a dog park to play run with other dogs!! And of course another puppy would help as they would play hard together and allow more interaction!! |
We all worry about our furbabies, don't we? Too fat,too thin..it's worse than a baby. Your Yorkie sounds lovely. Perhaps just cut down her feeds to 2 per day as she is getting older now. Will she play fetch with a favourite toy inside? My holly loves to fetch her squeaky newspaper and gets a lot of inside exercise that way. She also plays lots with my 2 year old cat. Sounds like getting another would be a great solution! |
I free feed my baby. He gets a small bowl full of royal canins puppy 33 mixed with their yorkie formula. I'm working on switching him over. he's eight months old and weighs 5.0 lbs. He gets treats once a day too(usually gets a treat during the day, sometimes mommy forgets  ) His vet records that they print out say he's average weight for a yorkie. What do y'all think? I can feel his ribs but they aren't prominant (like hes malnourished) and he has huge back leg muscles (hence the name Tigger). |

I'm sure Tigger is probably ok! I can't feel Dori's ribs no matter how hard I try... so if you can feel his that is how they are supposed to be! :) Normally 6 lbs would be a good weight, but the vet said there is too much meat in her bones! HA! Is it just one small bowl a Day? About 1/2 a cup? I don't want to feed her too little. The back of the dog food bag says 1cup for a 5lb dog at 20-24 weeks, but that must be too much.... I can't even stick to human diet! Dori may be doomed! |
i think your baby needs a little more activity. play with toys or take a walk with her. romeo's harness started to get tight so i bumped his walks up to 2 times a day and cut back on the puperoni and he lost a pound!! |
3/4 cup sound like a lot to me.. Jazzie (8 years, 10 pound) only get 1/2 cup a day and she needs Curves too! Her doctor suggested I take her to a nutritionist!!! I know what the nuttitionist would say too... She need more exercise. Well, guess what? I just saved $100!!! Seriously, your food calls for 3/4 cup a day for her weight? My 4 pound girl gets 1/4 cup a day. They are on Natural Balance. |
I will exercise her more. It was 4 degrees here yesterday, so I will have to try to get her to run around inside the house some more. I will cut down her food to 1/2 a cup, I just wanted to make sure and see how much everyone else was feeding their pups. My hubby isn't helping though!! I told him we had to put her on a diet, and he went out and bought her new treats! There are not low fat either! |
