Tiny little girl Hi everyone!!! We got our new baby girl last night. She is a precious little angel. Shes a cuddler and wants to be held all day. I am going to buy one of those slings I can wear and put her in. The problem is according to the breeders scale she was 1 plb. (I felt comfortable with that weight, thats what Chachi weighed when we brought him home) However when I went to the vet she today she weighed in at 8oz. I don't feel as comfortable with this weight. Does anyone who has had a tiny puppie like this have any advise you can share with me? I have a high calorie food for little ones from the vet so hopefully that will help get her weight up. |
8oz 8OZ..I do not understand breeders who do this to the pet buyer. What is the harm in keeping a puppy until it is big enough to place? It saves the buyer so much stress and worry. I wish you all the best..make sure she eats well, try not to stress her, use Nutra-cal and sugar in the water. I have a 4 month old who has just recently reached a pound!!! |
Thanks Yorkierose!! I don't understand either. I bought Chachi from her and we are really happy with him and thats why I purchased form her again. This little pup seems way too small to be with me. |

Wow - that must have just blew you out of the water. I can't believe it. I have no advice as Tia was over two pounds when I got her and it looks like YorkieRose has you covered ;) Good luck though - when do we get to see pictures? :D |
Aimme- I'll take some pictures soon. My brother-inlaw- has our camera but we will be getting it back this weekend. Yes it has blown me out of the water!!! I was waiting for Chachis sister and she was verysmall. She died suddenly while we were waiting for her>(she must have had underlining health problems) Anyway this girl was available so we adopted her. Now with her weight and thinking about that other little girl I am concerned. Other than that she is drop dead precious. My boy is all boy. She is a soft gentle girl who wants to be cuddled all the time. I can't even put her in her crate she cries. Don't know how much sleep I will get for awhile. She is just precious. |
Yikes! a half of a pound! Just talked to our breeder yesterday, & Kodah just hit the one pound mark on the scales & she is 9 weeks today. She wanted me to wait & pick her up towards the end of next week just to give her a little more time with her mother & one small brother. She let her two brothers that weighed 1 1/2 pounds leave yesterday! Good luck with her & can't wait to see pictures! Have you named her (or did I miss that somewhere!) |
Wow! 8oz is really tiny! We brought Esme home when she was 1.14 and she seemed so delicate! I can see why you are worried! I wish I could convince my husband that my Esme needs a sister! I would LOVE to have another baby yorkie in the house! Mari |
We don't have a name yet. It looks like it could be Jules or Jewels right now. |
Chachi, do u mean 8 ounces when u say 8oz ? i find it a bit difficult to convert coz we use kilo's, and ounces here, but if ur little one is 8 ounces then dont worry too much she will be fine as long as u keep her warm ( they cool down fast) and make sure she eats and drinks well, she will probably need more feeds then 3 or 4 a day, make sure she is lively and u will find that she sleeps a lot, well thats what Chelsey did at that age and wheight she is now 16 weeks and weighs 14 ounces and she still sleeps a lot, she loves her food and is going strong... shes growing really well, she rules the roost... if she keeps growing like this she ll be a perfect cuddly little girl ;) |
Jules or Jewels its a pretty name either way!!! CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR NEW BABYGIRLY!!! :congrats: ~Cielo :p |
OMG, it is one thing to let a large, say 2 pound, Yorkie pup leave its mom and littermates at 8-10 weeks. But, it is inexcusable to place such a small fragile puppy in a new home at this weight. IMO a responsible breeder would insist on keeping a puppy that tiny with its mom and littermates til it is old enough to have a blood panel done to check for preliminary signs of PSS. Is its fontanel closed? Heart check out okay? I know not all tinies have health problems but the chance is still present.. Not only does the breeder have a responsibility to keep the puppy for a longer period but the buyer also has a responsibility to pay for the baby and leave it in the proper environment til it has a better chance of surviving.. I know you will love that baby, but it could also be loved when it is a little older and larger. Sorry, if I hurt feelings cause I do not intend to. My concern is the best interest of the Yorkie baby.. |
No offense taken. When we were at the breeders last night she weighed 1lb according to her scale. Since tht is what Chachi weighed when we brought him hme I felt comfortable with that. I agree with you in most cases it is better to stay with the breeder. With this breeder however, I feel she is receiving better care with me than she would have in any other circumstance. She had other offers on her while I was waiting on her.(shes 8 weeks old) So she was going to a home no matter what. I also just weighed her in on my husbands weight watcher scale and she weighed 12 oz. A little better at least!!! Anyway it seems the vet and breeders scales are off. |

all things considered We agree if we had been properly told the correct size, we would have reconsidered the timimg. With no fault of our own this is what we have recieved. we are being very responsible owners of a 12oz young girl. We had a vet appointment the very next day after we brought her home. I will have to say its either take her 2 1/2 hours back to a very old and at times irresponsible breeder that i know will not take her litters to the vet as often as the should be taken. or be a responsible and caring owner as to know now the circumstanecs and the comitment it will now take. so all things cosidered, i know at this point that what is best for her is to give lots of love, time, and good nurturing including more vet visits already scheduled. We assure everyone that she will get the best possilbe care that we can give. She is eating very well and is getting more and more active. she is loved in our hearts already. she will be very well taken care of at this point! As all things considered Chachis & new girls Dad |
It sounds to me like you are making the best of a very hard situation. I'm sure that if you felt this person was responsible enough to care for the puppy correctly, you would return her until she was bigger. It sounds like you have your ducks in a row as much as you can. Good luck with her - keep us updated too! (I love the name Jewel - it was in the running with Tia ;)) |
I would like to know how much you paid for her. I am looking for a smaller male and the prices I am seeing are insane! I know a lot of people get up in arms when talking about size, I am just curious if you feel like answering. Sorry, please dont take offense. |
She was $1200.00. The prices are ridiculous I know. This is in Indiana and this breeder does not breed for tinys. The one I bought was the smallest of that liter. The mom and dad are 5 pounds. |
tiny You are probably a much better home for this tiny girl then where she was..I am hard on breeders and call it like I see it. There are only a couple reasons a breeder rushes them out the door at 6 to 8 weeks, no matter the size. The quicker they are placed, the more profit and less work for the breeder. Plus, if the pup has a problem, it is on your dollar. How many posts have we read about breeders refusing to pay vet bills that are clearly their responsiblity? You have raised a puppy and that is a bonus. |
Thank you YorkieRose. You are right. I am just relieved she is eating well and is active. |
I'm kind of in the same boat though not as bad. My baby is 4 months and 2.2 pounds. I wanted a yorkie and one on the small side but not one that will most likely be 3.5 to 4 pounds as an adult! As most of you know I love her to death and she is as healthy as you can get! We must have spent the better part of 2 hours outside today and she still has energy. I got Sheila at 8 weeks and she was tiny. Just look out for her and follow yorkierose's advice. YorkieRose, I just want to say thank you for being a part of yorkietalk. Having a reputable breeder as a part of these boards helps so much! I know you speak your mind and it is appreciated. Me, I know dogs but not like you at all. I only say that because I grew up with my mother very involved in the show circuit (show doggie midwife if you will for the kennel club). She was a registered nurse that did the float shift (trained to work anywhere in the hospital) . She raised 4 kids with no dad and helped her best friend (rest in peace :( ) run a kennel of one of the top SLD'd (Standard long haired dachshunds) and PBGV's (Petits Bassets Griffons Vendeen's) in North America. I guess what I'm saying is I know how much work it is and thank you for your advice. Your words are never harsh. You are breeder that loves and cares for its breed and the maintaining the standard. Thank youi and I hope we get more responsable breeders like you to join the site :) PS- my mother has a yorkie, an Irish Setter and a dachsie right now :) |
I also think she is much better off with you than the idiot who sold her so small! I know you will take good care of her! I know you know this, but just watch out for low blood sugar. Lexy will be 12 weeks old and is just 1 1/4 lbs. Her breeder wouldn't let her go until she was sure Lexy was eating well. When I brought her home I put her in her new Snuggle Pups bed and she tried to nurse on the stuffed "mother dog!" It was soooooo precious! :p |
She is doing great so far, I took some pictures put didn't use the flash (not to stress her) but they are a little dark so i will take some more tomorral with natural light. Chachi has been going to her crate when she yelp's, and now when we let her out chachi comes over and lay's next to her and then she cudles up next to him. It's real cute hes trying to be big brother. we never let her out with-out on of us being more than a hands length from her. I would also thank everyone for thier honest opions this community is at it's best when we all are honest with each-other. I do believe the breader is pushing them out quicker than they should be, for a varity of reasons. we would have probably went to another breader put we did like Chachi's temperment. and we like the thought of him having a sister with him. but his full sister was small and we were waiting for her to get bigger and healther it would have been 12 weeks but she didn't make it and i don't think she was ever taken to the vet. Breeder then said his half sister would be ready at the same time, that we would have picked up the first sister.when we were there she seemed small and she even weighed her so we could see her weight. but 13 hours later surprise. but I would have to say 3 scales breader 1lb vet 1/2lb home scales 3/4 lbso who know's!! all i know is she will get the best from us. and again thanks for everyones honesty. Chachi's & Chachi's 1/2 sisters dad |
Good for you and good luck to you. We are bringing our new boy home tomorrow....the Easter bunny left him at the breeders for us....he is about a 1.5 lber.....Have a blessed Holiday and enjoy your new girl...... |
And good luck to you gybo68 i hope all goes well for you, your family and the new addition. I didn't realize how much joy a yorkie could bring to our home, so when wife said let's get they new one i would haft to admit i was an easy sale. happy Easter to you Chachi's & Chachis 1/2 sister's dad |
NOT trying to defend the breeder at all here...but perhaps her scales are just different from the vets and she didn't *purposely* send home a puppy that small. I'm only saying this because when I got Gracie, the breeder said she was 1 lb 6 oz. that day. In fact, she weighed her in front of me, and the scale (which wasn't digital) said 1 lb. 6 1/2 oz. Yet, when I took her to the vet the following day, she was 1.06! There's a big difference between 1.6 and 1.06! But here's the kicker...to be honest, I didn't even realize it myself until the following month when I took her back for shots again, and they said "Oh, she's up to 1 lb. 4 oz!" and I'm like "Hmmmm, no, that can't be right, she was 1 lb. 6 oz. a month ago when I first brought her in!" and they looked at the records and said "No, she was 1 lb. 6/16th of an ounce then! 1.06!" Ohhhhhhhhhhhh! Well dummy me didn't realize that's what the weight was! She's now 20 weeks old tomorrow, and 2.02 lbs. (that's 2 lbs. 2/16ths of an ounce for those of us scale challenged!) Ha! |
