Adult vs Puppy Food? Does anyone still fee their adult dogs puppy food? My friend and I were having this discussion last night and I found that she is still feeding her 5 year old Yorkie with puppy food!!! She says that her Yorkie is the right weight but wants her to fatten up. She has never put her Yorkie on adult food yet. Is this OK?? I know that puppy food has more fat in it and it's not meant for adult dogs because it can cause problems in the future. |

I put my adult female on puppy food because I thought she was preg and was not eating her reg food. I also let my male eat on the puppy food awhile because he lost some weight by not wanting to eat and worrying about the female on heat. well I dont think shes preg so Im will slowly put them back on the adult food. |
Dori did not like her puppy food 1/10th as much as she liked her sisters adult dog food!!! (I had a 130 lb Bull mastiff who after 10 years is now at rainbow bridge) It was a real big problem because the Mastiff was a free feeder and even if I raised the adult food up off the floor Dori still went nuts over it and would climb and jump to get it. One time she ate sooo much that she made herself puke! So, I told my vet and her suggestion was to switch and make both their food puppy food. She said it would be fine for my adult dog to eat puppy food too. So if it helps my vet said it was ok, but I'm not sure if it would be ok for her whole lifetime. |
I feed Lottie on Natures Best Science diet puppy food and Alfie on the Adult version of this but he prefers the puppy stuff . I also sometimes give him Royal canine yorkie food which when I checked the levels of protein , fat etc was the same as the puppy natures best. So checked with vet and he say 's both was fine . |
Thanks for all the info, will let my friend know. :) |
I do believe weight is the biggest problem. I had my adult dogs eat puppy food as I free feed. When I had Bronx fixed, he also had an ear infection and they put him on steroids, he gained 3 pounds - from 5 to 8, so I changed them all over to adult food when the pups were about 7 months. |
