New Yorkie Mommy and New to YT I want to say that this site is great. I started reading all the postings about 3 weeks ago in preparation for my new puppy. Here is the story: I picked up my puppy last Thursday from a Breeder in upstate New York (my sister bought 2 yorkies from her). I bought the puppy home on Thursday. Took the day off on Friday (I work full time) so that I can have 3 days with her. She is 10 weeks old. On Friday, she used the potty early in the morning (I was actually surprised she was trained so well). I kept the stool to take to the vet. Took her to the vet, she was checked and the vet said she seem healthy. As soon as I got home from the vet, she used the potty and I noticed she had blood in her stool. I being a new yorkie mommy (never owned had a puppy before) called the vet. The vet prescribed dewormer medication and told me she should be fine (her results came back negative). I was told to give her 1/2 pill that day and the other 1/2 in 3 weeks. On Saturday she used the potty and she had blood in her stool (when I say blood, I mean a speck, not a lot). I called the breeder and she said it may be stress. To keep an eye on the puppy and update her with any new information. Sunday came and she used the potty, no sign of blood at all. I was so happy, she is so cute and lovable. She was very active even when she had blood in her stool, she was eating and drinking water. On Monday, she was fine. Yesterday, when I got home, I notice she made this weird sound. It sound like she was sneezing. She did that about 3 times before her bed time (not continously). This morning she woke up, she ate, used the potty and was playful, but she was still making that weird sound with her mouth. It does not sound like a cough. It sounds like a loud sneeze (I can't explain it). Anyway, after reading all the postings, I am starting to panic and think there is something wrong with her. Do you think I am worrying too much? This is my first pet. My kids are 18 and 19 so this is the new baby. Oh and by the way, my son is her sitter when I am not at home. She is scheduled for her third shot next week. Should I wait until next week since she is active, playing, eating and drinking water? Please advise. |
Welcome To Yt! Hi and Welcome to YT. Blood in the stool is not something to take lightly. You did the right thing checking with the vet and breeder. I would take her back to the vet with your concerns. Did the breeder give you a warranty? She might have been incubating something and now the symptoms are showing? It's so hard to say. But Yorkies babies are delicate and I would rather be safe then sorry! |
I would take her back to the vet too. The coughing could be kennels cough. It is a good sign when she is eating and drinking though. |
Hi and welcome to YT hope your puppy is okay .I live in Rockland county ..do you live anywhere near there? I got a new puppy who is now about 18wks old .I think your gonna enjoy it here great people and great doggies to! |
Kennel Cough or possibly collapsed trachea? |
Welcome Welcome to YT! This is a great place!!!!!! Great info and wonderful people. I'm so sorry to hear about your baby. Please take him to the vet. Let us know how he is. |
Welcome to YT..hope everything turns out great with your new furbaby:) |
Welcome to YT!!!!! I would take her back to the Vet. She's so young, and it's best to stay on the safe side. What did you name her????? We would love to see pictures :D :D :D I'm sure every thing will be OK. Again, WELCOME :D :D :D :D |
When I first got my puppy, I think I made my vet sick with all my phone calls. I think almost all new mommys go through that. But, its better to be safe than sorry... Call the Vet again, if she does have something, its better to catch it early before it develops into something serious. And, if its nothing, then at least you will have peace of mind. |
Thanks for the information. Her name is Dezi. I just got home and she is running around and kissing and wiggling her tail. She is not making that weird sound. I have an appointment with the Vet on Saturday. If she starts again, I will take her before that. My husband thinks I am a little too obsessed with her health. He said I read too much on Yorkies and now everytime she makes a sound or a weird noise, I diagnose her. Yes, the breeder gave me a warranty and she keeps emailing me so we are in touch, she seems to be concerned also. I will post pictures soon. She is so cute! She is almost 2 pounds. |
Hey and welcome to Yorkie Talk.... I do not think you are being obsessed with your baby's health. They are fragile and they go down fast when they get sick. Did ahe get tested for coccicidia when she was at the vet...it's a fecal test and you said she tested negativ for worms but coccicia is a parasite, not a worm. That is quite common in babies during the stressful transition to their new home. She may have picked up kennel cough at the vet's office. That is also common, not usually life threatening and is like a doggy cold. They don't usually do much except maybe a round of antibiotic if it is kennel cough. It can last a couple of months but usually the dog is fine otherwise and happy and eating, playing etc. Good luck with your new baby!! |
yes, she did get tested and she had specks of blood only two days (not all the time, just maybe 4 times a day). She seems to be fine today, she is starting to bite. I hope she does not become a biter. Isn't she too small to start to bite? At what age do they start?. Thanks for your advice. |
When they are that young, most likely she is teething. She should get over it in a couple of months. You're baby's name is Dezi.. mine is Desi.. Actually, her full name is Desiree. Then I have Millie whose full name is Milagros (I know, I know.. her name is bigger than she is but thats what my husband wanted to name her.) |
That is funny, I wanted to name her Hazel and my husband thought Dezi was a better name. She is very playful today. I am keeping a close eye on her. Everyday, I see something new in her. Today is her day to run around and bite. I keep telling her no and she thinks I am playing with her. I signed her up for training classes. She will start in March. I will post pictures this weekend. Are your babies tiny or regular size? I think she is going to be a regular size yorkie. I did not want a tiny (they are so cute) because I work and I know they need more attention. My friend has a tiny one. She is 6 months and weighs 2.0 pounds. She looks very delicate. |
Desi is standard, one year old and about 4 1/2 to 5 pounds.. Millie is going to be small, she is 5 months and I think she's about 2 lbs..if that.. Luckily, she eats like a truck driver and she's very active and very healthy. |
