Bordatella vaccine every six month?
 

My vet says that we will have to get the Bordatella vaccine every six month for life, supposedly it doesn't last very long. I am just curious if everybody hear has it done as well...

I've run across vets now making the bottom line the most important thing and requiring unnecessary yearly shots. Great for you in suspecting something didn't seem right and asking for other opinions. If there isn't a specific reason for this shot that you haven't posted, I'd be wondering what that vet's motive was.

Bordatella (Kennel Cough) is a good thing to have your dog vaccinated against, especially if they spend much time around other dogs who could have it - at a kennel, doggie daycare, groomer, etc. I once had a dog who got kennel cough apparently from the dog on the other side of the fence. He was pretty sick.

When I was in the States, they told me that it had to be repeated every six months. My vet here in London says that they have found that the vaccine is good for a year.

I believe it's once a year also. Six months sounds excessive. It won't hurt to get a second opinion.

There are about 125 strains of kennel cough and no vaccine covers all of them...in fact they take care of very few (about 25). Kennel cough is a contagious disease and is common but rarely life threatening. It is likeded to a "doggy cold". If I had to weigh the risks of kennel cough vs the risk of vaccinosis from over vaccinsting my dog, I would risk the kennel cough.

My dogs do not get Bordatella. Please research what the vaccine actually protects against and discuss the necessity if this with your vet and maybe a homeopathic vet for a second opinion. I think you will be glad you did.

A titer test can also be done before giving another vaccine to see what your dog's immunity level is.

He recommends against the vaccine unless you live in an area that has a particularly deadly strain and then he recommends the vaccines. FYI...I've heard every 6 months to 1 year. If your dogs are around a lot of other dogs (i.e. dog parks, walks, doggy day camp, etc.) it is good to do it every 6 months. I take Stomper to PetsMart Doggy Day Camp and they require it every 6 months to protect all of the dogs.

I think they can put it up the nose or inject it.

I do that once a year but after reading a book called Scared Poopless, I am wondering if all this medication done yearly is needed.
I know rabie shots are needed but the rest??? I think after there shots when they are pups and the first yearly shot is enough if their imune system is strong.

Well, IMHO, the problem with the internet (and with some books) is that you can find "experts" to back up any belief, true or not. It makes money, after all! There is a reason for the saying "You can't believe everything you read".

As for me and mine, I have a vet that I trust and I will continue to take her advice.

The state paid all the vet bills and autopsy. I will not give a pup that shot but will when they are older. Scares me to death to think of that happening again.

My vet would give my golden retriever the kennel cough vaccine (up the nose and he hated it) yearly. I occassionally had to kennel him for a family trip and the kennel would not take him if it had been more than 6 months. So occassionally he would get it after only 6 months. The vet said it wasn't necessary and that a year was fine but would go ahead and do the 6 month if needed to satisfy the kennels rules. To be honest, I'm not sure if either of my yorkies has had bordatella yet. Never boarded them so I hadn't really thought about it.

In AZ if you kennel your dog or take it to a groomer you have to have the Bordatella - this is another reason I have someone come to my home to stay with the gang when I travel.

Since we do not have Lepto here I don't have the vet give Lepto.
