Microchipping
 

Can someone please tell me if this is painful?

Does the animal have to be put to sleep, where is the microchip installed, and is it about the size of a kernal
of rice?

Also, do vets all over check for this if the dog is brought in, and is a new patient at the clinic? If so, and things don't
add up, will they actually call you, even if it is long distance.

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I am thinking about doing this.

I live in Germany so I do not know if this will help at all.
My dog is 5months old and we got her microchipped 5days ago because I am planning to take her to Greece for a couple of weeks and in the requirements was to get her microchipped. I would do it anyway though for her safety. The vet told me she didnt need to be anesthetized but warned me that the needle is pretty big. And IT WAS. She did not move or cry at all. We were all suprised. He inserted the chip in her neck.

Vets ARE supposed to scan all the pets that come in to be sure that the pet belongs to the owner that brings the animal in. Keeping that in mind this protects both the owner and the pet.

I hated reading the part about the needle because I am dreading taking her in for one shot in April. I guess I am overly protective, but feel I need to do this.

If your furbaby is around the age of being neutered/spayed you can do the microchip then ;) .

I have had my little girl for 10 mos., and she is 3 -1/2
yrs. old.

If she had not been spayed, I would have done this.

Can I do this when she gets her next shot, or does she need to stay overnight? I rather doubt this, but don't know for sure.

i'm cutting a pasting something i've previiously posted:

i just got bunjee microchipped today! the local animal control had a free microchip clinic. i gave them the recommended $10 donation for local residents. it'll cost me another $9 to submit and register the information for the national registry. that's 50% off the normal national registry price of $18 since i got the chip at a shelter.

i also had the option of bringing bunjee to another vaccination/microchip clinic held at a pet store and not sponsored by the local shelter. the price for the microchip is $39 plus the national registration of $18.

if you question whether or not the chip works, take your yorkie to a shelter or a vet and have them scanned to confirm that the chip works. shelters will automatically scan animals brought in to find the owner. but i really wish vets and vaccination clinics automatically scan pets brought to them as well. it would give me more peace of mind.

one thing i have to complain about the microchipping tho is that the needle and chip used for a 50 lb lab is the same as on a 5 lb yorkie. which means, the needle is HUGE for my poor bunjee. he yelped really loudly when he was injected and then turn to hide in my arms and just whimpered. i felt so bad. but it's for his own good and safety. luckily, 30 minutes later, he play with his playgroup as nothing happened.

I watched my sisters dog get microchipped, and it wasn't a big deal at all. It was all done in a few seconds (like a shot), and her dog didn't even act like it hurt at all! I was surprised. It's a very worthwhile thing to have done, and not much to it. You just take them home immediately. I will get my 2 girls microchipped when they are spayed.

I am just waiting for Titan to get old enough to get it installed. Peace of mind is what I want in case something should ever happen to my little boy. Knowing that no matter where we go he will always be returned to me. Alot of places are making it manditory to have your pets microchipped. It is just another part of responsible pet ownership.

All my puppies are microchipped when they are 8 weeks old . I never heard one crying when it is done .

My three are micro-chipped too! Didn't even flinch when it was done! Now I am on my Vets office to routinely scan for chips. If a dog was ever lost I would expect Vets offices to be on the lookout!

Its scary for us to watch it being done, but my dogs did not mind it anymore than when they had their shots...but I feel a lot better!

Edie is chipped. I had it done while she was under anesthesia for her spay operation. I would not have her anesthetized only for installation of the chip, as anesthesia presents its own dangers.

While I think chipping is important, it does not take the place of a tag, which Edie also wears. When she was a puppy, I could not make her wear a tag because she kept chewing on it. Now that she is older, she has a tag with my cell phone number on it. This way, even if we are traveling, she can be returned to me.

What chip did you get? And do you know if Crystal Tag is read in Europe? My vet could not read that chip because this company blocks all readers that do not come from them. Since I am going to be coming to Europe myself I am thinking of rechipping mine.

It must not be that painful because some people have it done when they are not being spayed and neutered and under anesthia. I didi it while mine were under anesthia.

I got an international microchip. He said it definitely works for Europe and I would have no problems when travelling to the U.S.

There are a few chips that work internationally. The most well known is HomeAgain. That is the one that Trixie has and that is one of the ones they recommended for taking her to Europe.

The vet told me to do it when she got spayed so she was under anyway. Although I'm sure if I wouldn't have done the spaying and microchipping at the same time, I'd probably wouldn't have put her under.

Do you know at how many kHz the Crystal tag operates on?
If it is 134.2 kHz which is set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) you will have no problems in Europe.

Okay one more question, I heard that once they are microchiped you can feel it in them. And the chip moves around in their body.

Is this true?

You can sometimes feel it and they do sometimes move around yes.

I want to get my pup microchipped.

I know it may hurt for a few minutes (and many dogs don't even complain at all) - but we can handle it. It is well worth doing.

PS - My pup is a big boop! The vet and I laughed at him about this - and we both hope he never really gets sick or injured. He wouldn't be a very good patient.

Microchipping isn't pleasant, but it's not horribly painful either. The animal doesn't have to be put to sleep. My puppy has already been microchipped and she's just now about 7 weeks old. Our vet did the actual chipping but my mom assures me that Eleanor hardly made a peep. The Avid microchip comes preloaded into a syringe with a really big needle and it is injected between the shoulderblades usually under the fat. This is the location with the least possibility for "migration" of the chip. Shelters and vets are supposed to scan every dog that is brought in to check for the chips. The scanner is kinda like a big barcode reader. My mom has been a breeder for about 30 years and all her pups get microchipped unless the buyer specifically requests that they don't. It's definitely a good thing though. Tags are your best line of visible defense, but if something happens to them you still have some way of identification.

We took Baylee to have her teeth cleaned today and 3yr check up (a few weeks early). They put her to sleep to clean her teeth and we picked her up this afternoon. I was asking about microchips and she said she did all her yorkies but gave them gas to knock them out because the needle is a 12 gauge (BIG). She said that if someone didn't want the gas another Vet in the practice would do it for us..We told her we would have it done in a couple of weeks with gas..
They also use home again...........

This is great info.

I live in a small town, and just found out today that the two vets in my town do not have a machine that reads the microchip.

Eventually, they may get one. But, they will microchip, and I believe it may still help. If someone finds my Yorkie, and takes it to another town/state, there would still be a chance the chip would be to my advantage.

How did Baylee make out with the cleaning? I hate having to do this, but my turn is coming.

Could you have had the chip inserted at the same time of the cleaning?

Punkin didn't even make a whimper when she got hers. The vet did say that he would check next time she was in to make sure it was still there. I guess they sometimes dig at the wound site and if it's not healed they can get the chip out and swallow it. I can feel a little bump there so I'm assuming it's still there - but I'll know for sure when I take her to have her stitches out on Saturday.

Baylee did great with her teeth and if we had talked to the vet before the appt. for the teeth they would have done both at the sametime.
Because Baylee can't have chew treats her tarter was really bad. they put her on an antibotic.

Time of Spay/Nueter...
 

Our babies are getting their chip in next week. And all of our families previous pets had them and it was never an issue. I must admit this was done at the time of their nueter/spays but they never acted like it bothered them... :)

Most of mine have been micro chipped and I have never had any of them put to sleep for that. I seen the needle and it's bigger than a shot needle but when mine were done only one made noises like it hurt.

Also when you microchip don't forget to register the number or if you move to notify the registry. I called our local animal shelter yesterday to ask why so many dogs in our Found section of the paper had microchips at the shelter and the owners were not found and this is what she told me.

This is a great point! The chip does no good if they can't find you.
