Hairbrushing & Bow Ties Hi....Zoey doenot like the brush or even me thinking of tying a knot in her hair. Do they get used to the brush and the baths over time ?? I got all the bows and cute things I hope she will like them :cry: We've had her almost 2 weeks and I have to do the bath thing but am nervous since she hates the brush so bad. I have been using the dog wipes on her, not happy with that either !!!! Please help....... :confused: |
Hi , some of my yorkies like to be brushed and some don't. But unless you keep them very short it is a necessary evil. I like to use a brush that is just for puppies, for example Lambert Kay makes Ever Gentle, or something similar.When you brush her it feels weird to her and she may cry or shriek, just continue you are not killing her and she will soon realize that. The bows she has to get use to also. It takes time. Remember she's a baby. :) |
Try using baby powder to keep her smelling fresh and try running your fingers through her hair.....this is what I did to help the brushing process.... |
You just have to KEEP at it and alot of the dogs will get used to it. One of my babies was a HORROR and now she is FINE. It took 2 months of a bath every week and combing a couple time a week but now she is fine for both. At first the combing were a nightmare. Screaming and crying. I just would do real quick at first and let her down and now she will sit in my lap however long I want her to so I can comb her out properly. |
Rosi had a thick cotton coat that matted awful, she hated the brush, then i bought a metal comb that she didn mind as much. It gets better ! |
Get the treats out. As you brush, give her treats over and over, with each stroke of the brush. Eventually she'll accept it. That's what I had to do with Matthias. So far as putting a bow in the hair? For Mattie it's a two person job. First I wrap him snuggly and tightly in a big towel, then one person holds his head straight so he stops looking at every single noise and I put the bow in. After that he gets treats again and he's off playing. |
When I first got Midori she hated it too. She still hates getting the bows in, I have to hold her head and put her in between my knees. But, once I get the thing in she could care less. She doesn't try to take them out or anything. It just takes time and practice with the baths, Oh and don't forget the blow dryer!! Yikes! (It helps if you keep the dryer way far away) :eek: Dori also hates the clippers I use on her ears, but last time I was using them to trim her after her bath she was really calm. I looked down into her face and for a split second I though she was dead because she was not squirming or shaking and her eyes were closed!! I quickly realized that she had fallen asleep WHILE I was shaving her ears! I NEVER though I would see that day! So there is hope! It also helps to put the bows in while they are sleeping. They still wake up but they usually tolerate it a little better, too tired to care!! |

Muffin is 8 months old and doesn't mind being brushed at all but she still HATES getting a bow in her hair. She runs from me and then after it's in she rubs the top of her head everywhere she can to get it out! After 5 months of this, I'm throwing in the towel and having the groomer cut the top of her head shorter the next time she gets groomed. As much as I love the way she looks with a bow, I think she'll enjoy being BOW FREE! |
Tiger hates to be brushes too so your furbaby is not alone. What they need is a distraction. I give him his tendon sticks and that's what keeps him happy and distracted :rolleyes: . . . without stuffing him too much! |
I say do it when they are little and do it offten. They will get like it over time. My little girl loves to be brushed and lets you do it, just so she can feel it on her belly. BE sure that you are not useing a brush that is hurting her. I like to use a big people comb she loves this and will not hurt her. Hope that this helps. |
