Please Help I left a piece of chewed dentyne gym on top of a tissue on my night stand. I think Zoe ate the piece of chewed gum. Is this something I should be worried about? He has been actign normal. I THINK he ate it earlier today. I know I should be more careful but since the gum was chewed, I think there was very little sugar left in it. What should I do? |
;) I would just keep an eye on her. Not to worry though I'm sure if she ate a little piece she'll be fine. |
Thank you for the quick response. I heard that gum is bad for pups due to some ingredient. He ate the whole piece...not big but still. I chewed it so I figured most of the contents is already ingested by ME. I will keep an eye on him tonight but he seems fine. SHould I be looking for symptoms? |
hahaha..ok false alarm..I found the gum! Thanks anyway |

Yay! Whew! I'd just be scared if Zoe swallowed it. Not sure if the gum would get stuck in her throat or tummy or whatnot. I've always heard never to swallow gum, so I had to research this a bit out of curiousity... --- Dear Yahoo!: What happens if you swallow chewing gum? Dustin Carbondale, Illinois Dear Dustin: We started by typing three words into the Yahoo! search field: chewing, gum, and swallow. We weren't impressed with the site matches, so we focused on the web page matches. We noticed a page from Ask Dr. Weil, a popular health and alternative medicine web site. Dr. Weil reassures us that the body will get rid of the gum in due time. However, he does point out that sugar-free gum, whether swallowed or chewed in large amounts, can cause digestive problems. The sugar substitutes (hexitol, sorbitol, and mannitol, to name a few) found in sugar-free gum are not absorbed, but pass into the small intestine and colon, where they can cause diarrhea. We wanted a second opinion, so we headed over to the Loyola University Health System, where a newsletter focusing on health myths addressed the topic of swallowing chewing gum. In their opinion, it's not the healthiest thing you can do, but if you do swallow your gum, it will simply pass through your system undigested into your stool (much like fiber). The consensus seems that it's best to toss your chewed-out gum in the trash, but if you do happen to swallow a piece, don't worry -- it won't sit in your tummy for seven years. http://ask.yahoo.com/20010223.html |
Glad you found the gum! I thought it might be stuck, hiding in her hair somewhere! :( |
hahahahahaha... I found the gum stuck on a plastic bag by my bed. PHEW!! I was scared!! Thanks fast eddie for the info. Its nice to know incase Zoe does one day swallow my gum. Laura...you crack me up!! If Zoe really did swallow it, I would've wished it was in my hair instead. I would die of anything happened to my Zoe. |
That what i was going to say is that sugar free is not good until I read the entire thread and saw that it was a false alarm. So glad!! :) |
Swallowing gum will absolutely not hurt a dog. Their stomach acid, like ours, can digest it very quickly. Not to worry. I read an article about this (children swallowing gum) in the American Journal of Medicine. And, I am sure that a dog would have no more of a problem swallowing gum than our 3 year olds would. And - I have never heard of any ingredient in gum that would hurt a dog. PLUS - how many times have my dogs gotten away with someone's gum. I can't count them. Carol Jean |
The only thing you have to worry about..... if it is bubble gum and they fart.... then you have one big stinky butt bubble. |
