Curious Questions...Little Long It's been forever since I've posted or read on the site! Bentley, the family and I have been soooo busy...we need a break. Oh well, I was actually surfing tonight, trying to play catch up and thought I'd bring a couple of questions to the table...for my reference and others. 1. Suggestions for skiddish pups...Bentley is very skiddish around people, I try to take him to work sometimes and down to the TKD school after classes. Today I went down after class was over to see some of our old students who were in town for the day and decided to take him. I let him down and 3 kids were running around, it literally scared the poop out of him. He is 8.5 months old now. He is also unsure of adults. 2. At what age did your male start hiking his leg to pee? |
Welcome Back I think it would be a good idea to try and socialize Bentley to different people and if things don't get better or get worse contact a proffesional. I have one male start to lift his leg at 4 mos and one after one yr. It varies but on the average I believe 6-12 mos. :animal36 |
Is your male fixed? I know this can make a difference, Bailey started hiking his leg at 7 mo. but not until he saw another dog do it. My girlfriend on the other hand had her Yorkie fixed right at 6 mo. and he never lifted his leg and still squats. Hope this helps. |
Bronx was 18 months when I had him fixed, he stopped marking at a quick rate after that and squats again. The boys were fixed at 7 months and now are nine months and do not hike their legs. From the beginning, all my puppies love people. I feel very blessed by this. Bronx & Zowie were great when we moved 18 months ago, having lots of parties to show off the new house with lots of strangers and kids running around - they love everyone. Now the pups are the same. We don't have a lot of people over and our kids are adults, but they still love kids! Sometimes I think it is in the breeding, but can be worked through with patience. If you don't have time to work with it, it may be best to avoid small wild children (which mine were, so I do not mean to offend) Now they are just large wild children. |
My female Jewels is very skiddish around other people too. She always has been and it hasnt changed. My male started lifting his leg to go pee about 7 months. He has never lifted it inthe house though. He is neutered. |
Animals love "routine". If their rountine is the family only or even some people coming over occassionally, then that is what they will be used to and be very confident in that situation and it can be surprising when all of the sudden your well balanced pup is scared to death in a different situation. When knowing you are going to be in a situation like that, have anyone that is going to approach do it in a calm manner....this makes a huge difference. A bunch of strangers "ohhh"ing and "awe"ing and loud and exicted are sure to scare a pup that doesn't get out a lot (even one that does). A gentle approach makes all the difference. Also, from my experience, Yorkies do start to lift their leg around 6-7 months. |
