Dog Insurance and Whole Dog Magazine Hi Everyone, I have two questions. First, after reading so many posts about the high cost of veterinary care for yorkies, I began to look into pet insurance. I went to the AKC site and got some information about the different levels of pet insurance they offer. Does anyone have any experience with it? I would appreciate your input. Also, I just heard about Whole Dog magazine from a breeder and wondered if anyone here subscribes to it and what your opinion of it is, especially as it pertains to yorkies. |
whole dog journal Areyou talking about the Whole Dog Journal? I just recently subscribed to it and really like it but I am more natural/holistic anyways. I am using some of their suggestions in the last few issues. suzie |
I love the Whole Dog Journal and have recommended it time after time. No it is not specifically for Yorkies but dogs in general. With my gang of 10 I am always pulling it out for advise and their recommendations. I think it is more important to have newsletters that can help me raise healthy, well behaved (well we try) dogs. Every year they post their recommendations for the best dry dog food and the best wet dog food from their research - this in itself is worth the subscription. They also do research on new procedures for fighting many diseases our little ones can get along with positive training procedures. I highly recommend it. I wish I could help you with the insurance but I don't use it. |
I can't really help you with the insurance....I have been looking to. I have asked questions on some posts, so if you go to the search option (in the blue bar) you can probably find several posts on insurance....good luck and please post what you come up with. |

I don't have pet insurance. All I can tell you is that if you are going to get it you need to get the policy immediately when you get the puppy. And generally genetic stuff is not covered. I subscribe to the WDJ. I love it. January's issue was an article on canned/wet foods and how to communicate with your dog (body language), February was dry foods and target training. I haven't read March's yet but the articles are Cancer prevention, teaching "Stay" and more. It has really good articles on training and little things like book recommendations, etc. It's short because there is no advertising and when you finish reading it you can't wait for more! I have a full subscription where I can read online and I get it mailed to me. It's not a full color magazine like Dog Fancy so you really don't *need* to get it mailed unless you do not have a reliable internet connection. You can just download the PDF and print the issue when it's available. |
Would like to have contact or subsriber information on WDJ. Thanks, B |

Well, I just ordered the Whole Dog Journal and am looking forward to receiving my first issue online. You save 20% if you select to receive it online instead of a hard copy mailed to you. You can still print it as a pdf from your computer. Regarding my confusion about which pet health insurance to buy, I think I'll try to post the schedule from the AKC in the breeders' section as well as here and see if I can get some other opinions on this particular policy. |
I couldn't get the table to print so that you could easily read it--it got scambled. Below is the link for the AKC pet insurance health plan. I would be interested in comparing it to the Veterinary Pet Insurance Superior Plan, but I can't find the link. It is very confusing to try to compare plans! http://www.akcpethealthcare.com |
