Vet shots for puppies? I was wondering when I should bring my puppy back to get a shot. I've been bringing him for check-ups but I keep forgetting his shot papers. I'm bringing him to different vets around my area to find out which one I like best and which one knows what they're talking about. Fred is approaching 12 weeks this Friday. His records the breeder gave me showed that he's had the VANGUARD 5 vaccine 9 times. I don't want to be behind on shots, so when did you guys bring your precious little ones into the vet for shots? I remember reading somewhere that most puppies have all their shots before they turn 16weeks Also, what are the shots called and around how much should I be expecting to pay for each one? THank you guys so much. I absolutely adore YorkieTalk. I can come here with any questions and everyone is so willing to share their knowledge. I can't say it enough and I mean it with all my heart.. THANK YOU GUYSSS! :heart to |

A puppy ONLY NEEDS (3) 5 in 1 started at 6-8 week and every 3-4 weeks no later apart ie; 6 weeks 10 weeks and 14 weeks. At 6 months rabies (every state varies on the requirements, your certificate from the vet should tell the expiration). A booster at 1 year old, then every 3 years after. vanguard is a 5-1 Parvo Distemper Adenovirus Type 2 Hepatitis Parinfluenza If you board often bordetellab shots every six month to prevent kennel cough, preferable 3-7 days before boarding. |
In that case, I probably read the shot records wrong! There were multiple numbers on the side so I assumed they were dates. I thought pups need to many shots, but I guess not! Thanks so much for your help! |
If this vet has a fax machine, you can tell them to fax the record to your new vet. Or you go and just pick it up. |
Diesel is 16 weeks old and has only had his first set of shots. When I took him to the vet 2 days after getting him, he had a intestinal virus and she said to wait a few weeks. Is this ok? He has an appointment tonight....Is it ok if he gets them all tonight or is that way too much for his little system. I should demand that he be at least 6 months old before his Rabies shot correct? |
The vet usually waits till their 6 months. I have seen them give them at 5 if your going to fly them someplace. |
different shots here Hi. It must be different depending where you live. Sydney had 1 set already when I picked her up (7 weeks) I then had to get her one at 9 weeks, 12 weeks (this one included the rabies shot), and 15 weeks. The vet told me that the 15 week shot is only given to toy dogs. I guess they give them smaller doses at a time so they need an extra dose. Now she is done for about a year. Also some warning for the new mom who started this thread. The shot that includes the rabies hurts (stings or burns) more than the normal parvo. So when it is time for that one expect a little more crying and fussing than normal. Lots of rubbing helps work it in and makes it stop hurting. Also good job in shopping around for a vet. My vet that I have trusted for years is retiring and I hate his replacement. The replacement is rough and unfriendly and turned a routine exam into a very unpleasant experience for Syd. So we found a new one who was gentle with our baby. Luckily we were able to schedule Syd's spaying with the old vet before he retired. I don't like to mess around with surgery. |
Well when I picked up Cordelia from the breeder she had her first 2 sets of puppy vaccination shots, but when I took her to the vet the same day I picked her up from the breeder, the vet said they don't count the shots the breeder gives them. So I was told to come back in 2 weeks for vaccination. Since then I have been going every other week. Well I'm supposed to go every other week, but I go about every 3 weeks because Cordelia gets so sore after the shots. Also if they tell you to get a rabies shot tell them you prefer to wait until she is at least 6months old. |
