difference between males and females Hello! Well I have found a breeder about a month ago and I am first on her list. She has a litter that will be born in March and I have first pick up on a puppy! I originally wanted a girl for the sole purpose that I thought a boy would lift his leg and mark his territory. From what I understand you can get them neutered at 6 months and they do not start lifting their legs until 6-8 months. Is this true? What are the main differences in housetraining and temperament between males and females? Thank you:) |
From just MY observation of other male and female yorkies in my life (friends yorkies), as well as my own, I find the females are much calmer. Though they are still very high energy, they tend to be more playful in a different manner. I found, in comparison to friends with male babies (and they don't always stop marking from being neutered. All the male dogs I know are neutered but still lift their leg) females were more easily housebroken. Males are also more territorial about their owner, in terms of agression and barking and have been less cuddly then females. I think with yorkies you win either way but this was just from my observation and helped me decide on a second female for my next baby. Again, not all males and females follow this guideline, just the one's I've come into contact with. |
:wavey: Welcome to YT. There is a wealth of information and support. I once had prospective puppy owners come to look at some of my puppies. They asked me NOT to tell them who was what sex. They wanted to choose on personality Only. IMO un-neutered males are more likely to lift their legs for marking. An neutered male may lift his leg but just to go potty. Good Luck choosing your new Yorkie Baby. Take your Time you will have him/her for a long time. :animal36 |
hmmm....i trust your observations and from the sound of it, I would probably like a female better...I will still do a little research and see what people's experiences have been like but I will keep your post in mind definitely. Thank you so much! |
I have had 2 males and 2 females all at different times and both my males were unneutered and both marked pretty bad, I don't know if neutering would have made a difference or not. All of them were sweet! |
I have two females and one male all unaltered. My little boy, Peppy, does mark some, but to be very honest, it is my fault. If I were to spend the time and take the effort I could stop his marking, but it is way too easy to clean up a drop here and there. The females are very good about potty outside, however, Chattie will occasionally pee on my bed when she gets upset. Almost like she is saying piss on you. LOL I could stop this too, if I were to put forth the effort. they are all lovers. |
I heard from many people that males much more loving and cuddly. Also you can make a "search" here and you will see that many people sad that to. I wanted female way more than a male, but after hearing the personality different i chouse to get a male. The only thing i am worry about it's maring problem. |
I have a male yorkie and he is very cuddly. He is also very playful and loving. He always has kisses for anyone that wants them. He is 7 yrs. old and still very playful. He loves his toys. If I kick back to watch TV he is on my lap for snuggle time. :) Good luck in your search. We actually did not pick him out on gender but by his personality. |
My male does not mark I have a male yorkie who is almost 9 months. I had him neutered at 6 months and he has never marked. He is very playful and loves to give kisses (on the lips). He is very independent, but loves to cuddle when he sleeps. Good luck deciding! |
Oh, I forgot to mention that he does not lift his leg to pee either. He squats. |
I have a male and 3 females . They have different personalities . My boy is the more calm and cuddler . I love them all . |
Welcome to YT!!!! Ok I have your answer, you can get one of each :D :D :D They are just so darn cute!!!! I would wait for the litter, and go pick the one who steals your heart. Male or Female Yorkies I could never decide, When Princess looked in my eyes, I knew she was the one. Sorry I guess I was NO help! But Welcome to our Yorkie Family!!! :yorkietal :yorkiesar |
Every breeder I have contacted and asked questions of has asked me whether I prefer a male or female... That's why I'm trying to find someone close enough to visit more than once (the day I pick up the dog)...so that I can pick a personality...cause I've heard both can be calm or "active and cheerful"... : ) Bren |
I have 5 of each and each one is different but my boys want to be on my lap more than the girls. The girls love to boss the boys around...they are such a hoot. I could go in either direction :p |
I have a 1.5 year old female and an 11 month old male. My female is very demanding, was easy to train (including lots of tricks), and loves to be a lap dog. She sleeps cuddled up to me at night. My male is very patient. He is the dominant one. He was also easy to train. He is unaltered (due to health issues) and lifts his leg to pee, but does not mark in the house. He is very independant but is learning to sit and enjoy being petted. Part of it is his age. They both love to play but my male has gone against the grain. He doesn't cuddle at all! In my opinion, each dog is different...it doesn't matter the gender. |
HA! I asked this question long long time ago. It's interesting that new people have same questions and I did when I joined!! So.. welcome to YT.. I always wanted a boy.. and I told my breeder I want a boy.. (I have been waiting on a yorkie too.. i have been looking for long long time).. anyway... at this time.. I don't really care if my pup will be boy or girl.. because... yorkie is cute and loveable.. anyway... Well.. I might take a boy over a girl because of price.. and they are both good anyway... Then at the same time.. I guess when you look a couple babies.. you might feel good about one particular baby.. Depends on how you feel when you see them.. I think!!! |
I have heard so many different things that I have just come to the conclusion that each yorkie is totally different no matter what sex they are;) I have heard that males are everything from cuddly, stubborn, independant, clingy, hyper, calm, afec tionate,cold..etc etc etc,and Iv heard the exact same about females! lol. Each person says something different but in the end it just means the same thing, its all about personality and not about the sex:) I am getting my boy soon (16 days!!!) and I am so exited to see what he will be like.I already have one stubborn yorkie and one super affectionate one (both girls) so what will Chicco be like? I have no idea:) Isnt it great!!! :happyboun :happyboun :happyboun :happyboun :happyboun |
Lets see now...Boys verses girls.........hummmmmmmm It has been my experience that both can be cuddlers, very much lap babies and very much wanting to please. I have both and my first male never lifted his leg to pee on anything other than the pee pad when he couldn't go outside. But now that I have more than one male it seems that when a female comes in the war starts..They hick everywhere. So I now put belly bands on the males when a female is in heat unless they are outside. So many people have asked if a male is better for a woman and a female is better for a man because that is what they have been told. Well my experience has been they love us both but I would have to say they tend to come to me more since I am the one who mostly takes care of them. Therefore in my experience it is not a male for a woman and a female for a man. So I think you should go to the breeders house, sit on the floor and play with the pups then decide what you want. :yorkiesar |
i've read that males tend to be more playful and affectionate and maintain a more "puppy-like" temperament throughout their lives. they can be clingy and eager to please. they are also more easily motivated by food for training (like their human counterparts i suppose ;) ) i've also read that females tend to be more independent and calm and become more "mature" as the years pass. they can also be moody at times especially if they remain unaltered. my bunjee is coming up on 5 months old now. i had him neutered a little pass 4 months old. he's expressed no dominance issues, no marking. he still squats when he pees. the only time he lifts his leg a little (like a faction of an inch off the ground) is if he feels that he's stepping in a pre-existing pee stain on his potty pad while he pees, then he'll lift that leg a little so that he's not standing in a stain when he pees. it's sooo funny. my understanding is that the lifting leg and marking thing is a dominance behavior that will not exhibit until the puppy is about 6 months, when he starts to become sexually mature. some puppies can unlearn the behavior once they're neutered. some puppies will continue to do it just out of habit rather than sexual need. but male or female, you can't go wrong either way!!! |
Both of my girls hike when they pee, they lift their right legs right up into the air :D |
I didn't go through everyone's responses, but Loki is now 14 months old. He was neutered at 6 months. He's never lifted his leg and he's 100% outside potty trained. However, he's very bossy and he does growl and bark a lot. We're working on this. (They are, after all, Yorkshire Terriers :) )He's EASILY trained and highly food motivated. (Although, when I say easy I mean we spend about an hour a day working on "homework.) But he knows like 10 tricks and he obeys commands. He cuddles when HE wants, which is when he's tired or cold. Otherwise he's GO GO GO. He loves my mom (grandma!) and he loves to play with the dog next door yet seems to hate other dogs. He gets jealous REALLY easily (again working on that.) His nickname is "Monster" He wants to be the boss, but we don't let him get his way. I've never had a girl, but I'm going to guess that this is totally his personality and has nothing to do with male vs. female, but geting a male does not automatically mean marking, etc. |
Wow everyone's responses are so helpful and I appreciate it so much that everyone is so helpful on this sight. I can't wait until I have my yorkie and can help other people out as well. I will probably (like alot of you have said) will wait until March when I see the litter to decide. Now I have heard so many positive things about males that my heart will probably lead towards a male. The only thing holding me back is my mom. I will be graduating from college in May and living at home for a year to save some money. I am buying the dog for me but she said she is fine with it living with us. She is just really into keeping our house nice and is afraid of the male peeing everywhere. But I would get it neutered so hopefully the marking wouldn't occur but I hope I will be able to convince her if I come to love one of the male puppies. I won't be working at all this summer and i will be able to get the puppy in May. I have been reading books and doing research so I am prepared for training it and taking the best care of it. That's why I will not get a job until summer is over. So, I hope my full time with the new puppy will help to train it well and adjust to the family...as well as prove to my mom that I can take care of any problems that may occur!! Sorry my posts are so long haha..thank you everyone:) |
I have a boy and will be 6 months old this week. He has not marked, but he does lift his leg to potty. His is very playfull and loves to cuddle when he sleeps or if I am being lazy. Good Luck!!!! |
So the males may or may not lift their leg to use the bathroom before 6 months of age? This doesn't necessarily mean they will mark in the house? So Im guessing it just depends...some males will and some will not? |
My male started lifting his leg to go to the potty about 7 months old. He never lifts it inside the house though. |
Ok I don't have either Yet but I know you can dress girls in cute pink colors...LOL |
I just had to respond because initially I wanted a female....had a name picked out and everything. Then I went to the breeder to see the male and female and decided on the male. I just love my Georgie I can't imagine a dog being more affectionate and friendly. The only thing that is a drawback (which it doesn't matter much to me) is that they have soooo many cute girly clothes and not so many boys clothes. My niece has a male as well and he is very affectionate and sweet. |
I wanted a girl also, because of the Marking indoors thing also. But when I found a breeder she only had 2 males left, and I was tired of waiting and looking. SO I took the male home. He was neutered at 6 months , Only marked inside twice at other people houses who had dogs, after being neutered has never done it again. He does mark EVERYTHING outside, but that's fine with me. He is very independent, and comes when HE wants, and cuddles when he wants, but is always at my side whenever I move anywhere, and sleeps right against me, and cuddles on my lap everynight when we watch tv. Comes to work with me everyday, and is great with strangers, and kids. NOt big on other dogs coming in his territory or his sidewalk, or street..ha. Wouldn't change a thing, and I'm glad I got HIM no regrets. Good luck in your search. And truthfully, they are all have minds of their own. And will all be different. HE has more personality than some people I know. And cracks me up on a daily basis. |

it's important to note that females can mark too. like the male, it's to assert dominance. |
