Biting Paws?
 
I have an 8 month old Yorkie and noticed he was biting his paws this morning? I checked them and didn't see anything wrong with them. Is this normal? Why is he doing this?

Very often chewing and licking paws is caused by a food allergy.

I agree but one more source could be, what you are washing your floors with. My gang cannot handle PineSol. I have to use Ivory on my tile floors.

That's true. Also it can be a fungus. One of my little boys had that :eek: had to use spray for athletes foot aka jock itch. :eek:

OK, so how can I narrow it down to allergy, fungus, or is it what I wash my floors with? Since there are no external signs of anything wrong then I guess it must be internal. So maybe that rules out the fungus?

What food are you feeding?
I have allergy problems with a horse it is very tough to figure out what exactly causes some allergies. And the only thing that works is to change EVERYTHING and then reintroduce them one at a time. Washing your floors with something different is easy enough and reevaluating his diet is too, fungus I know nothing about.

Jan, did you try Malaseb shampoo for the fungus? I know it clears up some fungal infections.

I feed him Nutro Natural Balance Wet food mixed with Royal Canin dry food. I just recently switched him to this new food but he didn't start doing this right after the new food. He has only been doing it lately so I guess I should wash my floors with something else and see if he stops. What do you all wash your floors with?

I would be careful with the Royal Canin. I had to take my dog off that because he was itching. It has corn in it.

Now, don't go thinking I neglect my babies or anything :) but this could also be something as simple as his nails need trimmed. My boys will bite their feet if they need a trim but once that's done they stop.

I also had to take Muffie off Royal Canin. She started to scratch a lot.

He does seem to scratch alot and I checked him for fleas but he has none. So maybe it is the Royal Canin. Should I stop giving it to him and see if he stops scratching?

His nails were trimmed a couple of weeks ago. How long do they take to grow back?

Yea I would quit feeding the Royal Canin. I get my dogs nail cut every three months.

My dogs were on Royal Canin for at least 3 months before I noticed their itching and paw licking/biting. It was as if it kind of had to build up in their systems or they developed a sensitivity to it after being on it. As soon as I got them off the Royal Canin, no more itching. No more licking their feet . My female itched so bad during this time she had a bald spot on her side that hasn't fully grown back yet.

I'd be very suspicious of the Royal Canin. Yorkies are often sensitive to the corn products in it.

He seems to be better today. He hasn't bitten his paws all day. He is scratching a bit but I noticed some black stuff in his ears so the itching could be from that. I am going to the vet on Friday and I will ask him.

Some better brands are Nutro, Innova, Chicken Soup for the Doglover Soul,Natural Balance, Califonia Natural and Canidae. You can usually find these at specialty petstores.

My baby bites his paw (s) too. He was given to me eating Eukanuba and Royal Canin mixed together we are slowing getting him off of the mix (given to us by the breeder) and using Benifcial. He will be completely off the mix this weekend. I hope the change in food changes his biting habits!!!
