Bad hair days! Hello! I took Sophia to the groomer 2 weeks ago and the groomer got all over me about not brushing Sophia the right way. I wasn't getting all the way down to her skin and she had become matted. (She is the first Yorkie I have ever had and didn't really know what to do, that is why I took her to the groomer! She made me feel so bad!) Well, I worked all those out over time, clipping whatever was too painful to work through. :aimeeyork However, it seems the mats just come right back the next day. Sometimes even the same day. It is just because she has puppy hair still? What do the rest of you do to keep this from happening? I ordered some Vellus products, $$ ouch!! Hopefully it will work though. I'm really not sure what to do. Any advice? Thanks. |
What is the texture of your puppies hair? I've heard wolly haired yorkie's hair tangle more easily. Maybe a good conditioner will help. If grooming is too much of a trouble, might think of cutting it short. Let me know what you did. Curious to find out. Mine all have silky hair and I never had a major problem with tangles(unless I forget to brush my yorkie who has a the full coat for over 3 weeks) :omg: |
Rambo has wavy hair. Its quite straight on his body but on his head and legs and chest its really wavy......even wen i had just brought him back fromn the groomers i found that his brush was dragging thru his coat a little....... i bathed him yesterday.whilst he was still wet i used a new spray i just bought with mink oil in it.it looks quite greasy at first but as he dried it went shiny and easier to comb thru.but his legs are were he has his wavy hair and i just cudnt get the comb thru properly getting there tho.i think trying a different type of brush may help too........ can any one suggest a conditioner or a detangler preferably not spray bcoz rambo hates spray bottles-that i can buy on the net that delivers to spain? |
Type of brush ?? Hi Bitsy - I am sorry your feelings were hurt at the groomers, been there done that years ago with my Schnauzer. I was wondering if maybe it's not the shampoo/conditioner you are using but the type of hairbrush. I have found that a slicker brush works wonders on Schatzie and Annabelle my Schnauzer. The brush does get to their skin (be careful not to push too hard though) and it really brushes out the coat nicely. Just a thought... :p Oh and yes, the Vellus might seem pricey, but it's so concentrated. Vellus should last you quite a long long time. |
That was going to be my next question...what type of brush to use! The groomer told me to use a fine tooth come and a slicker brush. The Vellus products came in yesterday, so I went right to work on her, and oh my goodness!!! What a difference good shampoo and conditioner can make. Her hair is so smooth and soft. She smells so good too. And, when I combed her this morning, it was pretty easy! I highly recommend the Vellus products now too. They are awesome. :aimeeyork Thanks for everyone's help. :) |
i use this wire brush that is supposed to be for dogs that get mats. It's this flat brush, that looks like a painter's tool and has little prickly wires on it. Archie loves it, by the way. |
Glad to hear the good shampoo and conditioner is working out for you. I will have to check out the product myself |
Spray Conditioner It doesn't matter what type of hair you baby has, or how old they are either, even if you use the right brush (I use a pin cusion brush) they will always get matts in their hair! If you use a spray conditioner in their hair, before you brush it out, so it won't be dry and brittle and even worse break-off from the brushing. I use a spray called mink oil. It keeps him cleaner, longer! And his hair is silky and smooth without looking greasy. You can't just do one without the other, especially if they have a full coat or you are trying to grow it out? I brush him at least twice a day, once in the morning with his full grooming routine of hair & tooth brushing, washing out his eyes or tear stains too! It's his daily routine that signify's that we are going out, and then in the evening while we are sitting around watching TV., he falls asleep. :animal-sm |
Thanks for all the tips. Where to you buy the mink oil spray? |
i have brushed toby i think once since ive gotten him..... and that was way back in december..... i keep his hair in a puppy cut and for some odd reason, he doesnt seem to matt |
Mink Oil Spray I did a Product Review on this stuff, it might still be posted? You should be able to find it at Petsmart, Petco and any Pet Supply? It cost me $7.99, not bad for a 12 ounce spray bottle. It's called "Bio-Groom, Instant Coat Glosser Conditioner", plus sunsheild. Here's the description on the bottle. Enriched with Vitamin E, this penetrating Mink Oil formula gives the coat a beautiful deep down luster and sheen with one application. Intensifies all colors and works equally well on short and long hair breeds. It thouroughly conditons coat and skin, while special suncreens help protect hair from sun damage, bleaching, drying and breakage. Promotes healthy coat developement and growth, prevents tangles and leaves the coat manageble, radiant and in top show condition. Non-sticky, non-greasy, essential for dry, dull coats. Let me tell you they are lon lying or over exaggerating either, this product does what it promises! If you can't find it go to www.biogroom.com or call 800 762-0232. Good Luck! :) |
My Yorkie has short hair right now and I'm trying to grow it out. I've been using a baby brush and comb to brush her hair like every other day and she gets a bath every saturday. But no doubt she always looks like she just got out of bed! :) (no tangles though -- Thank God!!!) But her hair doesn't look smooth and shiny like most of your pictues here on this site. (beautiful Yorkies!) I was told to use J&J baby shampoo and Coat Handler Conditioner on her...What do you guys think? Oh! and how long does it take to grow out a yorkie's hair? Is there anything i can give her or use on her to speed up the process? |
