Purebred vs. Mixed breed
 

We have been looking for a playmate sister/brother for 9 month old purebred Alexis for a little while. We have kept our options open as to what breed, while agreeing that the puppy should be under 15 lbs and non-shedding. I have leaned toward another yorkie.

I recently stumbled upon a person who lives within an hour of my house who was having their first litter of Yorkie puppies (well, not HER but her female dog, lol). The litter was born a week ago (one boy, one girl).

Here's my dilemma. Lexi has had some health scares (albeit none long-lasting nor permanent) and this has caused my husband to shy away from a purebred dog. He is now asking me to look for a mixed breed (specifically a maltese/yorkie, or "morkie").

I haven't made any promises to the breeder with the puppy that I'm interested in, but everytime I look at their pictures I want that puppy more and more. I'm comfortable that the breeders dogs are VERY WELL taken care of and much loved and that the litter (one boy, one girl) is healthy and the puppies will be handled.

What is your opinion about a purebred vs. a mixed breed and how would you suggest I convince my husband that I WANT THIS YORKIE boy!!!

Hrmm I have both a purebred yorkie and a mixed yorkie poo. I love them both dearly. With your hubby shying away b/c cause of the health I dont understand but tell him that shouldnt be a reason not to get a purebred. All dogs purebred or mixed can end up having health problems.

I guess I really dont know what to say. With my mom she loves yorkies or yorkie mixes and it doesnt matter what she gets as long as it's healthy. Only thing about yorkie mixes are you never know what it could look like. I was happy Bradley looks like a yorkie and not a poodle.

Personally, the only time I think a mixed breed is "healthier" is when there are lots of breeds mixed together....a true "mutt" as some people say. I love these dogs but hate calling them "mutts", is there a nice way to say this? I usually just say mixed breed.

Anyhow, I think when you only mix two breeds, you just add the risk of health issues that both breeds can carry. Any dog can be healthy or not, it just depends on the dog.

I say if you want that Yorkie boy, then go for it!!

Bentley Bear is a yorkteese and he is perfect! I don't think you could go wrong with either one of them! My Fiancee didn't like small breed dogs but I don't think he could love Bentley any more!

Sandy is mixed, and she has had all kinds of health problems. It just depends on the dog, really. If you are comfortable with the breeder and the contract she has, I would say go with whatever your heart tells you :)

Use the regular way to get what you want...nag, cry, act sad, serve peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner... this should work... JOKE! I hope you get your yorkie boy!!

I think you have to do what you feel is right...i think u're going thru a dilemma right now trying to make up your mind also..hehehe Good luck choosing between a purebred yorkie or a mixed breed puppy. The only advice i can give to you is if you choose to get a mix, please please please, do not buy it, adopt from your local shelter!!

I agree. I absolutely can not stand when people think that mixed breed dogs are going to be healthier than my 2 purebreds. A mixed breed dog just has MORE breeds to get problems from, imo. And like Bitsy said, ANY dog can be sick/healthy. It depends on the dog and it's genetics. Make sure any dog you get has health tests done on their parents. That'll lower your chance of health issues.

ANY dog can be sick..purebred or not....but one thing is true, purebred dogs have a closed genetic pool...meaning, they are prone to certain problems, according to each breed. Doesnt mean all of them are sick...on the other hand "muts" might have the best attribute that complement themselves that comes from different breeds and from having a wider genetic pool...

so each case is a different one...

A Purebred Heinz 57. :) That's another popular term for "mutts".

I have had MANY Heinz 57s over the years and honestly there is no difference (except I find them a lot smarter lol) b/w a "mutt" and a purebred. Both are great dogs. If you truly do want this Yorkie puppy, tell your husband. Also explain to him that just b/c Lexi has had a few issues doesn't mean all Yorkies do. ANY dog can have problems. I had one lab with Congestive Heart Failure. Did my other 2 labs have it? Nope, they were perfect actually. lol Every dog is different. Good luck!

DITTO....any dog can have health problems........it is all a big roll of the dice......
