Human food for yorkies... Hi Everyone, Whenever my husband and I sit down to eat at home, Teddy (our yorkie) always want some of our food. I feel so bad when he gives us those "puppy eyes". I want to give him some of our food but my husband said its not healthy for him. He said it will mess up their stomachs and can cause "the runs". But I've read from other people on YT that they give their dogs human meat, pasta, cheese, etc. I want to give my yorkie human food since I'm sure its tastier but my husband said it's not a good idea. What are your thoughts and which human food is safe for yorkies? How can I convince my husband to let Teddy eat some of our food? Thanks!! |
lexi get human food all the time... i make chicken for her, steak, whatever i eat she has some, but she also has her own food i give her.. its ok once in a while.. lexi is used to it and she doesnt get sick..im very careful what i give her. |
I don't feed my dogs any table foods. When they look at you with those puppy eyes, I give them a bully stick or a carrot. Don't let them make you feel guilty, you're the alpha dog. They will be in a lot healthier on puppy treats than human food. |
I use to give Gracie table food, until my vet advised me to stop. Lots of normal human food can be toxic to yorkies. I do give her chedder cheese in the am, to help her take her medicine and that is about it. I have a list of what is not safe, but I can not put my hands on it at the moment. I will keep looking and will post it as soon as I find it. I know that swiss cheese is considered toxic, I remember that one. My x was about to give Gracie a piece when I was reading the list out loud to him. |
Don't ever start giving people food from the table during dinner or you will create a monster-every meal time will have the dog sitting there looking at you. If you never start, it won't be an issue. That said, I do give my dogs people food occasionally, but I have read that it makes them fat and shortens their life. Too rich of foods like Turkey skin can even cause Pancreatitis-a potentially fatal condition. I try to only feed them high quality dog food and dog treats, with only an occasional treat of people food-and not from the dinner table! |
i only give bunjee little bits of dairy products such as cheese and cottage cheese as treats every so often. Otherwise, it's always dry dog food with dog treats. I never feed him the same time as I'm feeding myself so begging for food at the table is never a problem. |
Human grade food for Yorkie's is good but you will need to do a great deal of research to make sure they are getting all the nutrition they need. If you are just feeling guilty because you are eating then I would not do it. You will always have a begging dog at the table and you will give them many mixed signals if you don't do it everyday even if company is there. Also you are not positioning yourself as the leader if you feed them from the table. |
Mitzi eats home cooked food all the time. Rice, chicken, pasta, fish, she even likes couscous! If you give your dog healthy food, its ok. Mine's a little muncher, she's always on the look out for treats. She has carrots and apples for treats, sometimes she has fruit loops! lol :D :littleang |
We never feed Bella human food. The only food we ever fed Kelli was chicken and vegetables (green beans and carrots), that was it. She was fed ALOT of table scraps in her former home. :( The vet advised us how terrible it was, especially pork of any kind. Plus, feeding them too much human food makes them resistant in eating THEIR food. There were alot of times Kel wouldn't eat her food and it took me FEEDING her to get her to eat it. :( |
You have to be very careful feeding human food. I do it, but not everyday, and you have to be careful of the fat content in what you are feeding especially of saturated fats, because toy breed dogs are seriously at risk for pancreatitis. Bruce gets little mini plates of our dinner when we are having if I feel it is healthy enough for him. Last night he had a little piece of Salmon and Broccoli |
Thank you everyone for your replies. They are really helpful and I will definitely take some of the advice on here. So far, we have only fed our yorkie his dog food (Nutro ultra) and puppy treats. If anyone has anymore insight, keep them coming :) This is my first dog ever but the third one for my husband. So I guess he has more experience than I do. Any more advice would be appreciated :) |

1 Attachment(s) We gave into Nelly, those eyes, we were weak, and now we have a reign of terror on our hands. We do not give her table food from the table anymore but she still there crying and barking at us, but I tell my husband to ignore her until she realizes she is not getting it. She is getting better but when she smells something really good she lets us know that she wants some. I do give her some scraps but it is usually chicken or veggies and it is never from the table, I give it to her after we have gotten up from the table. I am posting a picture of what we were going through with Nelly, I had posted on a thread before when I asked how to stop giving in so the picture might look familiar to some. |
From the time we got Miko, we let EVERYone know not to feed him people food at all because we didn't want him to be a beggar. We didn't give into those puppy eyes, even though it seemed so hard to do. Now, we can eat comfortably without having Miko trying to get into the food. I can literally eat dinner with Miko on my lap and all he does is lay there happy as can be. He's not even interested in the food :) |
Val, that is such a cute picture of your little Nelly! LOL I guess he wants to join you for dinner :) |
