Question for Vegetarians I have sort of a weird question that I was wondering. For those of you that are vegetarians, what do you feed your yorkies? Do you try to put them on a vegetarian diet? I am not trying to start anything controversial here, I am simply asking out of sheer curiousity. This question has entered my mind a few times and I kept forgetting to ask. :) |
I could be wrong, but I don't think animals (cats/dogs) can be on a veggie diet. I was watching Animal Planet once, and this lady was a vegetarian. She wasn't feeding her cats any meat (she had lots of them) and they got really sick and skinny! The animal cops said that they are carnivores and need meat. PS. Also, my cousin's friend is a vegetarian. She has 2 dogs and 1 cat and she feeds them "normal" cat/dog food. :) |
My sister is all organic vegetarian, but being short on money she can only afford Purina and like-wise. OBVIOUSLY, not vegi. food. I'm not vegetarian, but a lot of our "vegetarian" foods are very popular at the boutique I work at. It's just all organic kibble with no meat in it at all. |
Hey Shana Look what I found... http://www.vegetariandogs.com/ |
Well, I'm not a vegetarian, but Miko kind of is :) Because of his liver shunt, he is on Royal Canin veterinary hepatic diet. This food contains a lower amount of protein and it comes ONLY from soy and vegetables...no protein from meat at all. So, dogs can definitely survive without meat even though they are carnivores, you just have to make sure that they're getting everything their bodies need. For example, Miko can't eat meat, but he still gets his protein and his food has the vitamins and minerals that his body requires. :) |
i don't eat meat, but daisy does. she has food and treats that are made with animal materials. |
Shana even most vegetarians feed their dogs meat. If you go and do a google search for the barf (raw) diet you will see articles about this. There are some dogs because of health reasons that cannot eat meat but for the most part, dogs should. |

Thanks for the replys, this is what I thought but I was always sort of curious about that. Thanks guys :) |
There are lots of vegetarian style dog foods now that are great for dogs and balanced to provide all they need. Yorkies in particular do not need a lot of meat due to their senstive digestive systems. Mine never get any beef at all but will occasionally get bland turkey or chicken. Pork of any kind is not good for them. |
I think carnivores should be fed meat. I cannot see any dog THRIVING on a vegan diet. I do not think we have totally bred that out of them yet. And yes, I suppose many yorkies have sensitive digestive systems, same as us. I have a GSD that has a sensitive stomach, my 2 yorkies however can and will eat anything and never have the slightest problem. My personal feelings are it would not be healthy for a dog. Again, this is JMHO. |
My partner is a vegitarian, so Miss Mitzi and I both hide in the corner with bits of chicken! lol |

Too funny, lol! |
I agree that most dogs should probably get some sort of meat in their diet, but meat is actually very UNhealthy for my Miko, and that's why I do not feed it to him... Protein's by-product is ammonia which is filtered through the liver and because of Miko's liver shunt, the ammonia affects his central nervous system and it goes into the bloodstream and that's what causes the seizures, and it would kill him. I'm just throwing this out there so that you all know that sometimes, it is not possible for dogs to eat meat for health reasons, and they can still live Healthy, and very Energetic lives as long as you provide them with all the nutrients their bodies need :) |

I'm a vegetarian but Simon and Hallie I assure you are not :) I even make them chicken on occasion! Usually they are more than happy to share some of my carrots, green beans, apples, or anything I'm eating with me :) hehe |
Same here... I'm vegetarian, but I could never do that to Trixie. |
I actually just became a vegetarian a couple of months ago, but I still feed Georgie his boiled chicken. I guess I look at like I know eating a lot of veggies is good for me, but because I am not sure how it will affect him so I give him chicken. I think I have spoiled him so much that I have to mix chicken in with his dry food or he will turn his nose up at it :D |
I'm a veggie. Have been for 15 years, but I feed Merlot a regular diet. I think it would be silly of me to try and make him a veggie too. What's funny is I won't have meat products in my house or prepare them for my family except for Merlot. When he is sick or for a treat I give him a boiled chicken breast. That's the only time you will find meat in my kitchen! :animal36 |

I just did some soy research Yup, this is an old thread popping up, Nicole! :p Reason being, I made breakfast and we eat soy bacon. I have two pieces left and thought the girls would love it as they have been going nuts over the smell of it. So I thought I would do some research online before giving it to them (for tricks!) and no where did I find any convincing evidence that it was as bad for them as I had been led to believe. So they will have it! They will have to EARN it, but I will give it to them in exchange for some nice performances. I may even film them for y'all! |
Several of the doctors I work for are vegetarians - and they just feed their dogs regular dog food - with meat and whatever. Carol Jean |

Its funny this thread got brought back up. The real reason I wanted to know the question I had asked, was because my secret pal was a vegetarian and I wasnt sure if it would offend her if I got her dog treats(possibly meaty treats) but I ended up sending yogurt drops:p Everyones answers were very imformative and I learned alot though :) |
