I feel so guilty.
 
We just got Angel on Saturday, and I had to give her back today. I took her to the vet b/c she sounded like she had a hacking cough. Not only did the vet say that she had a slight upper respiratory infection, she also has heart arythmia (heart skips a beat). I was so upset b/c I can not afford (financially and emotionally) to take care of a sick dog for the rest of her life. Even though people "feel" for me and tell me I did the right thing for "me" I still feel like I abandoned her. If anyone feels like I did the wrong thing, please, I'm begging you, I don't want to hear about it...I'm upset enough. I'm not writing this to get responses, just want to let you all know how upset I am, how my day went today, and explain why I took Angel off my avatar since some of you would probably notice. Thanks for understanding.

I think that you did the right thing, and I respect you for it. It takes a strong person to say what you have. You didn't abandon her, you gave her a chance at life. Some people would have put her down. Not everyone is rich and can afford the care that she will need. I am glad that you caught this early. It will be hard and lonely for a while for you. I am glad that you are so smart when it comes to yorkies to realize that the number one thing to look for in a puppy is HEALTH, not size or price. I hope that you find the healthy puppy you're looking for. And kudos to the vet for catching her heart problem. I hope you get to feeling better about it.

Thanks. I hope she knows that I loved her for the short period I had her.

I am very sorry to hear this news..you did nothing wrong. The person who bears the blame is the breeders vet for missing these health problems at the time of the health check. Best wishes

Here is a hug especially for you. :hug: I understand exactly what you mean. You don't need to say anything more and you don't need to feel guilty. I couldn't do it, either, at this point. I still haven't gotten over Muffin and you just have so much you can balance emotionally. Take good care of yourself. :)

Yeah, I don't know how he/she could have missed it. My vet listened and then he told me what he heard and he said, "now, even though I have been a vet for many years, I still want to go and have the other vet listen too." I thought that was so professional of him and I appreciated it. I was hoping he was wrong, but both vets heard, or shall I say didn't hear (the beat) the same thing. It really sucks that people care about selling their "product" and not about the health of the puppies or the emotional strain on the owners.

I am so sorry. That is a very hard thing to do. The important thing is that you know you did the right thing. If for whatever reason you can not at this time take on that responsibility, you know it was the right thing to do. You are a very big and loving person for being able to make this decision...I don't know of many people who could do that out of love. :( :hug:

I just can't help but think what's going to happen to her.

I'm very sorry you have had to go through this! Just always remember, your baby is better off, she will be able to be healthy puppy, and in turn happy puppy. And that's most important right? I hope you do not blame yourself, and once again, I am so sorry!!

The breeder should have all of her puppies she plans to sell THOROUGHLY checked out so things like this don't happen. of course most people fall in love the moment they see a yorkie puppy. I just recently had a vet let me down with a health check on a litter. I have changed vets . But it was not as serious as yours was. But I think you did the right thing. Again I'm so sorry.

Angel was a maltese not a yorkie.

You are SO right! Bad breeders and bad petshops want you to be so emotionally tied so that you won't return it. Alot of petshops tell you that you can only return it and then it will be put down which is horrible. It causes the emotional strain you're talking about. Of course people wouldn't want the dog put down so they end up pouring hundreds of dollars into the vets the petshops usually give them the "first check" with and then the dog passes. So the pet shop "wins" because they still get their money. Or they do the exchange or give some money back but you can't tell anyone about the bad experience. I think you made the right decision and hopefully stopped other people from going through the same thing.

Thank you for the correction, I'm new here and in the thread there was no mention of the breed so I assumed it was a Yorkie. But I'm sure in this case it makes no diff. But thanks again for the correction and I'm sorry. :)

awhh im so sorry, i know exactly how you feel...
I went to this breeder once and they were HORIBLE!!!! The poor puppy was stinky, coughing and like his hair was horrible....even though I want to just turn around and run but i still took him home and bath him and took him the the vet then....after that we gave him to a good home...I just couldn't let him stay there... :(
