When do my babies start eating.... My Daphne had a litter of 2 pups born on January 1 (New Years babies!), I'm not sure when I should feed them or what I feed them. I'm new to the whole baby thing. I've bought all of my Yorkies and this is the first time I'm breeding. It's a little scary and confusing. I've read and talked to my vet about hypoglycemia and of course I want to catch that before it becomes a problem but my vet has said that shouldn't be a problem until they are weened. Daphne feeds them often but she doesn't like to stay with them very long. They are very fat so I have no doubt they are eating well but Daphne keeps looking at me like "enoughs enough already". This is her 3rd litter so she knows what she's doing but she had the other litters with her previous owner. She's 3 years old. If someone could let me know I'd appreciate it. I don't want to start them too young or on the wrong food. |
I usually start my pups on mushed/watery dry puppy food at about 4 weeks old... I soak the puppy food in water (not much food...).... then when the food expands I mush it up.... keeping most of the water with it.... This just gets them started in learning to lap (don't fret if they don't go for it)... I do this everyday (at least once a day... sometimes more).... By week 5 the food is still soaked but I don't leave the water... they just get mushy puppy food. By 6 weeks they are usually eating on their own... and also eating from "mom's" dry food. I did have one litter which refused the mushed dry food.... I started them on canned puppy food during week 5 (picky, picky, picky). By 6 weeks they are all weaned from mom. Good luck!!! :) |
....oh... also... during week 6... those first few days without mom... I give them nutrical with every meal.... until I see they are eating enough.... it usually is only for a few days. :) |
Is the Nutracal for the hypoglycemia? I'm worried to death about that. :( |
Yes, the Nutrical is to keep their sugar levels stable.... just a bit on the tip of your finger (dime size?).... I usually put it on the roof of their mouths. |
