Itchy Underarms Hello Everybody, It has been awhile since I have been on Yorkie talk and now two posts in one day. Why does real life get in the way of our fun so often? For those of you that don't know, Corky has suffered a skin problem for the last seven months following a two week stay in a pet hotel in Encinitas Ca. The skin problem was so bad(before he was given to me and came to Paris) that he scratched off half of his hair on his right side. He suffered secondary skin infections and other problems. We had to keep him in a baby suit when he was home to keep him from scratching himself (till he bleeds). Our vet was at a loss. He did scrapings, blood tests, everthing. No, it isn't a flea problem. We switched his foods, stopped his treats and things have started to get much better. A couple of days ago we returned from a five week trip to India. We leave him with a friend in Paris who has her own Yorkie (in wonderful health). Some of the skin discoloration on his stomach (blackish coloring instead of light pink and healthy) had returned and he is scratching under his forearms. Nowhere else, but the skin under his forearms is red and ugly. I am putting tea tree oil on it (he can't lick there so hopefully it won't be harmful). Our friend swore that she had given him nothing but the pet prescribed dry food. Our friend suggested that he could have a fungus under his arms. Anybody else have something like this with their Yorkie? Corky is 11 years old and didn't have any skin problems till this stay at the horrible pet hotel. He hates the cotton baby suits, but until his itching stops, I don't want him ripping his skin off again. Please Help. |
I dont know what it could be since they have done skin scrappings and not found anything. My dog has allergies and mites and he has chewed the hair off his back and his skin has that blackish color too I think that is just where it is healing. |
Hi Chachi, Have you tried mixing some tea tree oil in your dogs shampoo? Also, Corky was chewing a few months before but the vet gave him two weeks of steroid shots and that seemed to get him over the worst of it. You may need to change your dogs diet it seems like he is allergic to something. The tea tree seems to be doing well on his underarms but it is still early days, I will keep you informed. Thanks for your response. |
I havent tired tee tree oil I want to where do you get it? Chachi was getting steroid shots too. Now he takes it orally. I have changed his foods many times. |
Tea Tree is wonderful if used properly Dear Chachi, Tea Tree oil isn't inexpensive, but realize that a little goes a long way, both for our yorkies and ourselves. If you go to a public gym or swimming pool or even hotels from time to time, and have ever picked up a foot fungus, tea tree kills this in no time. Please note, it is NOT for internal consumption under ANY circumstances. You can find it at most Health Food stores or Whole Foods etc. I recommend that you buy 100% pure tea tree oil and use it as follows: If you need to put it on an area that your yorkie absolutely cannot lick then dab some on a Q tip or cotton ball and gently put it on the skin. If the problem area is very large or generalized, put some shampoo in a small bowl, add 3-4 drops of the tea tree oil (it is really strong stuff) and mix with a toothpick to blend. When you bathe your yorkie, wet him or her down completely, turn off the water, and suds up your baby with the shampoo/tea tree oil mix, LEAVE THE SUDS ON FOR 10-15 minutes! This is a must. Then rinse. Make sure the shampoo you are using is a gentle non irritating vet prescribed shampoo. Obviously you do not use this mix anywhere on their head or around their eyes. Corky had a scratch free night last night and his underarms are not nearly as red and inflamed as they were 48 hours ago. I can't help but think it is the tea tree. |
