Leave Alone Or Not i am torn we are going away for a few days. my yorkies are 1 year old. i have neighbors who will check on them, i have a doggie door, gate locked and block off the halls in my house. or send them to a kennel which i have never done before and a little scared. any suggestions? thanks |
I would suggest leaving them with a friend or someone you know well...or at worse case leaving them at your house and have someone come play with her a couple of times a day!! This is just my opinion....I don't feel comfortable with kenneling so I would not want to do that!! |
that's how i feel, but my friend said she would be nervous they get hurt or stolen left alone. i don't trust a kennel. to me being at home i would have them checked on a couple of times a day. they are in thier own surroundings. my only real fear is that i have a pool, they don't go near it anymore  . tomorrow i am going to check out a couple of kennels. my yorkies are so little i don't want them stressed and they stop eating or traumatized. thanks for your input!! |
I wouldn't feel comfortable just letting them alone even if they were at home. Nor would I feel great about kenneling Teddy. I guess that's why we never go anywhere? Is there anyone you could have come and stay at your home while your gone? Good luck with your decision that's a hard one! |
Another option - foster care I am facing the same issue except I will be gone for a lot longer than a few days. Kimberly King, a wonderful member here, has suggested and helping me to get a foster mom for my baby and I am still working on that - thanks again Kimberly. ;) Check out the craigslists.org and click on your location - city. Then type in pet sitting on the "search craiglist" box. Hopefully you would find someone who can babysit at their house while you are gone. I think it would be better than leaving them alone at home most of the time. Good luck. :) |
Dog sitters are really common around here, so that's what I do. I find that it's less stress on the dogs AND me (no packing them up to go to the kennel or worrying about the kennel's schedule) and it's cheaper, too! Especially if you have more than one dog. My house is also very dog-friendly with a dog door and dog run. The sitter will stay over (if booked far enough in advance!) or stop in for play/feeding visits as often as you want. She will even take them on outings if you want her to. And she's GREAT with the dogs! Good luck, whatever you decide! |
Friends with college-age kids are also a good source.... |
I would do a google search for petsitters for where you live. I have a woman who comes to my house and spends the night for $60.00 and it is worth every penny. This is her business and she is fully bonded. I think the kennel will stress out your little ones to much and again there could be different diseases they could pick up. I also would not be comfortable leaving them alone because someone could easily come over the wall and steal them or a predatory animal could do the same thing. When I come home from a trip my gang is happy to see me and I don't see the stress situations I use to with a kennel. |
I"m so confused!! We did find a decent kennel. I am so stressed about leaving them. I am leary about having a stranger in and out my home. My friend is going to make a surprise visit to the kennel and I am going to tell the kennel if they show any signs of stress my friend will come pick them up. My friend offered to keep them but she has 2 boxer pups herself. The dogs are actually best friends but she would have her hands full with 2 yorkies and 2 boxers. Thanks for your imput! |
I would try to leave them with someone you trust....Personally I would never relax if my girls were alone AND had a doggie door.....I like to see what may be in my yard before they go out - plus yorkies are diggers.... IF it comes down to not having someone to keep them in their home....Your vet may refer a good boarding place for you - I know my vet does boarding and they have a nice playroom and everything... but I wouldn't leave them alone and have someone check on them - that sounds way too risky |
If I were closer.. i would watch your yorkie for you.. but sorry I am at other end of the country... If you have someone who can watch for you.. then... you should let your dog to spend time with her/him before you leave... that might descrease some of anxiety!!. :) Good luck |
Yes I would not want to just leave them. There is way to many things they could get into even if you think you have all your bases covered. Plus that pool you mentioned really would worry me. There is no way I would leave my little one in an area that had a pool. They fall in and their hair would just pull them right down heavy with the water. Or they could jump on the cover and go right under. I know 3 different dogs that have had this happen to them. Be cautious. |
