New born Question????
 

How can i amke sure the babies are sucking properly????? i checked their mouths no one has anything wrong there, but the one seems to gum the nipple more than suck, i have tried placing her on, and she still seems to gum HELP! :(

That must be scary and I hope a breeder comes on quick for you and helps here - I wish I could but this is better for the pro's to answer ...GOOD LUCK !

Are you hearing that one little pup taking in air (little piggish sounds...). You don't want it taking in air while trying to suckle. Look closely.....is the baby attached and only breathing through its nose (this is how it should be)? If not, get it reattached. Once they are on good you should be able to tug on the pup a little and it should not let go but suckle harder to stay attached (thinking it is a littermate trying to take its place). If it is a weak one, you will have to learn what to do to care for it. Please let us know.

I just went back through your other thread to see how many pups you have....congratulations!!!!! I noticed you mentioned the Maltese....don't let other dogs around those pups, the mother will really STRESS OUT! They turn into little vipers to protect their young. You want to keep mamma as calm as possible....it will make her a better mother. If she is in fear, she may get rough with the babies trying to "hide" them from the intruder and could accidently kill them. Just trying to help and hope this doesn't sound too "much" or too bossy.

Another thing....if the pup can't seem to suckle right...you need to check for a cleft palate. :(

I think your help has been wonderful - I really love reading the posts like this and these are the kind of things little things that can pop up and reading it BEFORE it happens can only be a good thing

I think I read that the mi=outh has been checked and no cleft is found. If that is the case, your puppy does NOT have the strength to form a seal and suckle so you need to supplement ASAP. When the puppy has enough strength, and if everything is okay, it will suckle.
I have never had luck with the bottles but many people do. The article in the current YTTM says that the holes in the nipple are sometimes too big and the puppy aspirates. On the other hand, if it is too small, it will not have strength to get formula out. So, work with it. YOUR VET should help you learn how to tube-feed the baby to help it get nourishment. YOU MUST KEEP THE BABY'S TEMP IN THE HIGH NINETIES or it will chill and die. Always pee and poop the baby with a cotton ball in warm water if the mom is not doing it..If mom is not licking the baby put a wee bit of NutriStat or NutriCal on the puppy and mom will lick it off. I have not read the post about the number of babies you have but Julz is right. ya gotta keep the other dogs away from that mom. If she stresses you could lose ALL of the puppies and it is not unheard of to lose the mom too..
So, relax, feed the baby, keep it warm..BTW, 1-2 mls of formula every 2 hours day AND night just like mom would do..

i tried everything, she died, i checked them, aand all three were fine then i heard wimpering and i found her with 2 pups and went searching for the third and she was laying on her, was it something i did??????? We named her ruby...i tried my hardest to get her breathing i did mouth to mouth, but i think she was already dead, because she was limp already

I'm so sorry to hear that. It does happen. I don't rest for days after a litter. You need to check in constantly (well, that's what I do) to see where the pups are. A mother dog can keep the little buggers alive, but will not rescue them from life threatening situations. There are so very many things to know and do in different situations that it would be almost impossible to try and convey them all at once. Please know that a pup does not produce its own body heat for 3 days. Keep the pups warm and away from any drafts. Put them back up to mamma if they stray away. It is amazing how much they can travel as soon as they are born. Again, I am so sorry that one did not survive. Please keep us updated and remember that there is no such thing as a stupid question. If you feel hesitant, feel free to PM me and I will help any way I can. I am no expert, but do have some experience.
