Ears At what age do the ears on a yorkie stand up? My puppy is 9 weeks old and they are still down. Do I need to cut the hair off the ears? My breeder cut the hair on the tips a week before I got her. I also have a question about trimming nails. My little Bella won't let us trim her nails. She yipes at us and we don't get close to making her bleed. Any suggestions? |
Hi and congratulations on your new puppy....I think most don't really stand on their own till ABOUT 3-4 months but all are different....It does help to trim the hair off ...usually the top 1/3 of the ear - You can look at yorkie pictures to get an idea of a proper look and go from there - and on nails - good luck - I think they ALL hate that ..I know both mine do - I wrap my girls in a towel and take out ONE paw at a time... |
my breeder put tape on his ears between the ages of 8-10 weeks. He's had straight ears since we took him home at 11 weeks. |
Ravens ears didn't totally stand up until 13 weeks. Before that her ears liked to play games. One day one would be up the other down, the next day they both might be down.........Then finally one day they stayed. About the nails, I always let my groomer do it so I'm no help there- Sorry Kim |
what if their a year old and still not standing? does this mean they will never stand? my girls are almost a year old and their ears are floppy. i have one girl that came home with straight up ears and i couldn't get the others girls ears to stand  |
In another thread some really helpful members answered my question about standing ears, let me find it for you.... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29669 Hope that helps some more. :) We're probably going to go with trimming Bella's ears and seeing if they stand, she's 10 weeks now. I started massaging her ears today (she actually LET ME! I was shocked), and am going to see how well that does over the next few days. She turns 11 weeks on Monday. :) Congrats on your new baby! |
Hi Kathy....I'm from Green Bay, Wi...welcome to YT...my pups ears went up between 21/2 months and 4 months....but it can take as long as 1 year.... |
Trimming nails!!! It takes six people. One holds the little Yorkie by its body. Another two hold each of the hind legs. One holds the front leg that you are not trimming. Another holds the leg that you are trimming. And you "the trimmer" make six. This is the fastest way to get it done. Carol Jean |
Ha ha!! Its kind of like the "How many Aggies does it take to change a light bulb"...six...One to hold the bulb and 5 to turn the ladder around! I wrap mine little ones in a towel. Have husband hold the pup and I go to town on the nails. As they get older some of mine are better at it than others but I wrap the ones who still squirm! Ears on mine..WELL each was different. None stood on their own..I taped to help them. Most stood on their own in the 5th month so no taping after that (thank goodness!). Good luck with the ears..many stand up after teething all by themselves! |
I don't have my puppy yet...but the book I am reading about Yorkies...written by a dog trainer said that it is best to wrap them in a towel like everyone is doing...and give them little taste of peanut butter while you are doing it. THis way their mouth is busy and they aren't thinking about it as much. Like I said I haven't tried it...But destraction methods work with my kids! |
Yes - food is magic. My pediatrician used to lie my children on their stomachs, give them a tootsie pop --- and before they even got it unwrapped - they had had their shot and were ready to go home. It worked everytime! Carol Jean |
 If you don't trim the hair on the ears will they go back to being floppy?? Just seeing if it's time to learn how to cut hair :) |
